Wooden flooring advice

Hello,
We are planning for the renovation of a flat. We would like to give it a sleek/modern and minimalist feel: white walls/kitchen/built in wardrobes and would like a nice dark wooden floor as a contrast.

We would like to keep things in budget and have a durable floor but also easy to clean (hence smooth instead of textured). we have noticed that Oak engineered flooring is rarely smooth and only walnut (beautiful but more expensive and less hard than oak) seems to have that smooth finish.

Anyone has any suggestions? We are based in UK. Many thanks

What I have always thought is, if you try to "match" an existing floor it looks like you tried and missed. When you go with something completely different, the result is yes, I wanted something different, and here it is. Especially if you lay it in a different direction. Does that make sense?

I am getting a herringbone floor laid and I would love some advice. Question 1, which direction to lay arrow pattern, pointing towards window or towards left wall where I will have my upright piano as the focal point of this small room? The width wall to wall is 3.01m the depth to windows is 3.25m. Question 2, should I run a “frame” of planks on the wall sides/all sides of the room or let the pattern run in under the skirting board? I thought a frame edging might make the room look smaller? Question 3, How to transition from the dining room acacia wood floor to the new oak floor? I currently have option of a saddle board between the two which would be level to both floors or an oak T-profile to sit between the two which would give a very small ramp. Thinking of painting/staining the transition black due to the colour difference between the floors. Any advice please?

Hi, I hope the renovation is going well! To answer your question - No, it would not look jarring. It is becoming more and more common to have one or two feature rooms using the herringbone style and to use straight plank in the other joining rooms. With regards to the flow of the flooring, once the woods are of a similar colour, this should not be an issue. I think you are right to go for a wood or wood effect floor as it will give warmth to a plainer room. Will look fab with white. I’m a fan of laminate. It had a bit of a bad reputation in the past, but some of it has that smooth modern look you are wanting. I have laminate in my living room. It was a budget flooring which we were going to update in the future, but it has fared very well so we shan’t be changing just yet! It was only about £9 a square metre at the time from Topps Tiles. Picture below. It still looks good after about 15 years and very easy to clean. Another option is wood effect porcelain. It can be cold under foot so best with underfloor heating.

For perspective - these are a couple of examples of floors that we like and that highlight the contrast dark floor white walls/furniture. I terms of budget I was wishing to find a good flooring (engineered) with 4mm thickness of wood (so it can be resanded up to 3 times) for about £50-60 per sqm
