Decorating walls and ceiling

Greetings,

I am currently making plans to renovate my future flat, which is an old ex-council flat from the mid-1950s, and I'm seeking advice. Is it possible to know according to these photos if there's any asbestos inside these walls and ceiling? Also, would you recommend bringing in a professional or does this seem something like a beginner DIYer could potentially tackle?

Thing with asbestos is whilst it is in the ceiling and walls and untouched it is reasonably safe, but as soon as it is tampered with the asbestos floats in the air as a dust and fragments and it is that that makes it very dangerous. The dust can enter the lungs and sit there for years. It is carcinogenic so I think it would be a good idea to test it first and then get in the professionals if necessary.

Impossible to know if asbestos based plaster was used without getting it tested.

Once again, carolins has taken the words right out of my mouth. I sometimes feel like a crusader for entertainment centers and lowering art! You have a dynamic room with so much potential. Your wall could look amazing with the armoire carolins has pictured above. Of course, lower your sconces so that they're a about 4" below the top of the armoire and about 7" from the sides. Your fireplace should be your focal point with your wall being strong but not competing. Rooms get personality from smaller accents but you have too many little things that take away from the great colored pillows and the picture. Be careful not to hang things in straight lines--top of pictures should never line up with tops of doors or curtain rods. I wish we could see your fireplace in another photo. Chairs should form conversation groups with the couch like Carolyn has outlined. I like your chandelier but you might think about lowering it or moving it above a dining table--it looks rather lost way up there.

I love your room, but it isn't done! Find some jazzy art to hang over the fireplace in vibrant colors. Select a major and minor color from the art work and add pillows, and 3 accessories that are LARGE to place on three places in the book shelves. If you like what you see at that point you are probably done, but if not then I think a glass and steel cocktail table round or oval would add sparkle, interest, and function to your room.....it really looks nice.

Cornforth white is one of my go-to colours, matched with a Grey carpet will look stylish and chic. Pairing these with Blush tones and a muted metallic Chrome / Gold or Copper would look perfect. Gold and Brush Steel tend to stand the test of time so either would be a great addition. A bespoke Headboard would make this space elegant and mature. You can buy an online kit from Amazon and lots of other places. This is a quick test.

But asbestos tended to be used in the dimpled artex of ceilings so there is no telltale signs from the pics.

And as Sonia says asbestos is unlikely. If you do have some it’s likely a board behind a heating appliance or a corrugated roof of a garage. If you suspect that’s the case then there are specialist firms who remove asbestos

Thank you all for your response, they are much appreciated. The joy of owning a property is being able to update it, make it your own, hang things on the walls, etc. I'll get the asbestos kit before doing anything of that, as per your suggestions.
