Use tile adhesive in place of plaster

We are doing up our kitchen. As we removed our old tiles, we removed huge chunks of the plaster underneath. See photos. Our local DIY store recommended we use a tile adhesive to fill in the gaps and create a surface that we can use to re-tile over. Does anyone have any experience of this?

A good tiler could tile over that quite easily.

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Masmccar76 put these photos on because she thought people would like to see a genuinely lovely transformation of her garden. Instead there have been some downright nasty comments. A guy removed my existing fire place and did the installation. It was fire boarded and sealed around where the stove sits. I had a paint mixed at the local dulux centre "slightly off white" diamond hard acrylic eggshell don't used oil based paint. This was painted inside the chimney before the stove was installed I used a small roller 3/4 coats. Front wall is again from the dulux centre Flat white emulsion. The whole look is very plain but if you like the look, dress the walls with tasteful art and a nice vase or two, It works for me.

I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

I agree with both of Sonia’s comments, and my concern would also be what you intend to do with the paper above the previously tiled area? Incidentally, the DIY shop was unlikely to be suggesting that tile adhesive is used to level out the surface before tiling, but rather to use the adhesive in the process of tiling to accommodate the irregularities in the surface. That would be quite easy to do, unless you’re planning to use unusually small tiles, like individual mosaics.

Is the old plasterer secure to the wall? I'd remove the old paper before making any final decisions.

Tile adhesive is not intended to be applied at large thicknesses such as a 12mm depth of bed. If the ”hole areas” are less than 10mm depth then a good tiler can tile directly onto this, and will use a tile adhesive intended for ”thick bed”. This will be an adhesive that comes in a bag and is mixed up on site.

If you have areas which are deeper than 10mm then the proper way to do this is to first build it back to flat again, which for such a small area is an easy DIY task. You dont need to achieve a perfect mirror surface finish!. Just build it up back to an even flat area. How?…. (1) First break away all other loose pieces. (2) ideally you should prime the porous old surfaces by painting surface with some diluted SBR or else diluted PVA resin, which will ensure the surface is primed a achieve good attachment of the new plaster. (3) Buy a small bag of ”pink thistle multicoat”plaster which will cost you about £5- £8 from any good DIY “shed”. Mix it up (mixing a bit at a time in a small tub by hand will be fine) and then apply it onto the wall to fill the low spots and create a flat overall area. As you finish filling the ”holes” use a straight edge, such as a ruler to screed the top surface roughly flat and level. If the holes are deep then best to mix and apply a little bit at a time. Say 3-4mm depth each time and allow it to dry between layers. Your goal is nothing more than filling up the bulk of the hole areas so dont apply too much. This process will give you best end result.

The one thing to be sure NOT to do, is to try to tile directly onto this area with a tub of ready mixed DIY store tile adhesive using very deep depth of adhesive. Pre-mixed adhesive will not work well with bed depths beyond about 5mm and if you try this you will likely find that the tiles fall off, or the adhesive behind the tiles takes many weeks to set!
