Both dark and light cabinets are very popular at the moment, particularly white, ivory, and light gray painted cabinets and darker stained wood ones. What seems to have gone out of style are the mid-toned honey oak cabinets. Whether you go dark or light is entirely a matter of personal preference. LIght maple and natural cherry are nice too, if you want a lighter kitchen with natural wood.
Depending on what your goals are I would be much more concerned with what isn't going to be unpopular in 10 to 15 years than what is popular now. There are classic looks that never go out of style while many trends of the day turn into a look that will date your kitchen and home.
