How to create a kitchen/ diner

We have fallen in love with a cottage however the layout isn’t brilliant - the house is a little back to front so the door that leads directly into the kitchen would be used as the main door.

Ideally we would love to create a kitchen/ diner to make a more social space. We were thinking of a side extension of maybe 4m but not sure if that would just create a long narrow room to squeeze everything into.

Would love to hear any ideas/ suggestions? The other rooms are all great and we wouldn’t want to change much!

Thanks for your suggestion! We would like to keep two bedrooms and the box room upstairs as a office space.

We had thought of a side extension out from where the current kitchen/ utility would cost less as we wouldn’t be re configuring any indoor walls.

Hi Divechick, No i love the layout, the kitchen is a good layout for using the dishwasher, fridge and cooker all close by., We have our plates and bowls in drawers which i love too.One thing we do need is more storage though. We are looking at knocking through to next room next year so the whole room will be wider and incorporate a utility. I think i will keep the general kitchen layout the same though but add more presses!

I painted my kitchen three years ago, and I love it. It's hard work and can take some weeks to do. You need to take doors off, remove the hinges and handles. Remember you need to prime and paint two coats on each side, so for a door that equates to six coats of paint and letting each coat dry. I used Mylands of London paint, I'm just hooked on this paint as the eggshell is dead flat with only 8 percent sheen, you wont get another paint any flatter. And if the paints good enough for Downtown Abbey, then it's good enough for us. I would hold back on painting wall tiles, as they are white and look fine , paint the cupboards first and see what it looks like. I choose Myalnds paint and had the colour mixed in a farrow and ball blue green. See photos. Good luck Yvonne

Hi Houzz'ers, We have a long kitchen / diner room which is split by a Circle wood burning stove. We want to be able to use this area not only as a kitchen and dining area but also, from time to time as a place to relax and socialize around the fire. (it is a spectacular fire). Due to the proportions, and the central fireplace, we are finding it difficult to furnish appropriately. We are constrained by central fire, two double doors (one into a sun room), a large radiator and the dining room windows. We are interested to see if anyone has any ideas that can make the room functionally work but also look good. The dining room table (it is fully extended and so can retract) has to stay as we have just bought it, however the other furniture can change or be removed. Thanks in advance for you good ideas.. :-) The room is approximately 10 meters by 4.4 meters. ( I hope the diagrams and pictures provide enough detail)

Just a question, how is the space in front of the utility room used? Is it usable ? Am I ready the plan right - is that a skylight marked?

I ask as if this area is usable, the kitchen could feel more spacious if the peninsula was removed and full height pantry, storage could be in front of the utility area.

You could definitely extend to the side. But it will cost more to reconfigure external walls than internal walls, for several reasons but mainly because they tend to be structural and structural changes tend to cost more than none structural changes.
