My husband and I are in the process of buying a 3-bed 1930s house. The layout of the kitchen/dining area is quite strange as the kitchen is squeezed into a very narrow area. We would like to have a bigger kitchen but still keep some space for a dedicated dining area. I am not a big open-plan fan either so we are thinking blocking off the living room completely so there would be another wall in the kitchen to play with. Another option might be to use the narrow space as some sort of pantry/utility but this might be wishful thinking given the overall space. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!
If you could annotate the plan with sizes of all the different bits of wall, window etc and provide some pics, that would be very helpful.
Not sure what constraints there may be, but putting a door into the lounge, closing the wall between it & the kitchen and moving the door into the kitchen to beside the staircase might give better possibilities.
The kitchen and dining space is really small, but it depends on what your requirements and preferences are.
If you are just with you and your husband, maybe this space will be enough, but you should definitely think more deeply about the layout of the kitchen and dining room.
I advise you to think first about what is most important to you, that is: do you want to have a large kitchen, without a dining room, or would you be satisfied with a breakfast bar instead of a dining table? Do you often have guests... etc.
Start with the things that are important to you and put everything else in order of importance. I have just finished a detailed article on this topic that I think you will find useful - you can read it here.
If the slider was repositioned to a central position in the rear wall, it would possibly increase the layout options to shift the kitchen to the larger squarer space and utilising the narrower area as a u shaped banquet seating dining option.
