Velux windows - advice

last year

Hi everyone. We’re in the process of a kitchen extension at the moment and we’re just looking at the velux window options. This is what our architect has put together and just looking for some advice on placement and whether we have enough. It’s a north facing space and the full width is approx 9.5 metres. One side of the vaulted ceiling is shorter due to an existing 2 storey extension which limits options. Thank you in advance

Best to show the floorplan of the room/s where the rooflights will be - including proprosed kitchen/furniture plan.

Thank you for your suggestion....one option that I had considered was something like the below - having double curtains (one voile,and one heavy curtain). Do you think that this could work in my space? Also, just to note, the curtain pole (and everything else in the room will be going, as this is the previous owners furniture), so I am not restricted to the curtain pole that is currently in the original picture. Hi Becky I'm not sure what style you are looking for but try www.solidor.co.uk These are the best low maintenance front doors you can get with lots of options on colours, inside and out. We are one of their installers in Colchester and have four on display, if we are near enough pop in, if not just find a local installer. if you are after timber we supply Bereco, again go to their website, not cheap but beautiful. We also can supply Grey windows, not in 50 shades, but in 3, so you can have from light to dark. Anything else just ask. Regards Joe

I too, am wondering why you were refused velux windows? Here in Scotland you are not allowed to convert an attic room to "livable space" - that is any room, other than a store room, without an escape window of a certain size, velux or other, due to fire regulations. Not sure where you live - in the UK? and what your regs would be? Again, I don't think you are allowed to open up a kitchen ceiling due to fire regs, this would obviously be a real danger in case of fire, when it would sweep upwards very quickly if a section was open. You obviously need to consult a surveyor or building engineer as a first step. If not done the right way, it can cause havoc when you come to sell, or even worse, if there ever were a fire.

New window advice

I want to make a new ope for a new window (or more technically a 'light' as I don't want it to open) in a really dark and dingy room that will hopefully brighten it up. I know the kind of Carlson window I need to align with the other there in the room already. But where will I find a builder who would do this kind of small job? Does anyone know a good and reliable builder to knock a hole in the wall make good once the window is installed? Perhaps Carlson do the whole service but I doubt it. Thanks for any advice and recommendations.

Thanks. Not sure if this picture helps but we’re having the kitchen along the side wall with an island and proposing living room further inside with the dining area either in the middle or under the vaulted ceiling
