Toddlers bedroom layout and furniture styling

Hey houzzers! Really struggling with my daughters (18 months now) bedroom layout and styling. I think it’s the placement of the door and window throwing me off , and perhaps the roundedness of the cot ?! I’m not sure what I’m missing but it’s not flowing. Any help/tips greatly appreciated. Open to trying a new cot to be honest! Ps so sorry about the mess in the room, taken in haste/ still getting the new place sorted x

Mostly, I would say it looks like the feeling is due to the unbalance. There are two that stand out to me that I would change if I were designing this room.

Firstly the top to bottom - the top of the room is very light with nothing there and the top has all the furniture, the flooring and the wall paint - so is darker and heavier.

If you are changing the blind, then go for a darker colour that compliments the bottom paint colour. Adding colour on the top of the walls would also help - this can be added with a few nice pieces of art (try Desenio). It can also be done with a few shelves and a new light fitting.

Then the second unbalance I can see is that everything is pushed out around the outside of the room. This needs to be balanced a little more for the inside of the room to make it feel more welcoming and inviting. Adding a neutral rug in the middle with a floor cushion or two and then pulling the pieces in a little.

Lastly, adding some greenery always helps - maybe a plant or two on the shelves. Personally, I would also add a tall floor-standing plant. They don't only add a feeling or life and vitality but they are proven to reduce the quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and natural toxins (like benzene and formaldehyde), helping you breathe better at night.

Thank you so much, Gina. This is all so helpful and I had never thought about the top/bottom balance! Mind blown. Is there a specific light shade you would recommend for the ceiling? This one came with the house and for some reason light fittings and fixtures are something I find super tricky choosing!!

Once again, carolins has taken the words right out of my mouth. I sometimes feel like a crusader for entertainment centers and lowering art! You have a dynamic room with so much potential. Your wall could look amazing with the armoire carolins has pictured above. Of course, lower your sconces so that they're a about 4" below the top of the armoire and about 7" from the sides. Your fireplace should be your focal point with your wall being strong but not competing. Rooms get personality from smaller accents but you have too many little things that take away from the great colored pillows and the picture. Be careful not to hang things in straight lines--top of pictures should never line up with tops of doors or curtain rods. I wish we could see your fireplace in another photo. Chairs should form conversation groups with the couch like Carolyn has outlined. I like your chandelier but you might think about lowering it or moving it above a dining table--it looks rather lost way up there.

Take out sofa, use beanbags and those blow up seats for their friends. Coloured rugs for tumbling and crawling on. Supersoft teddy bear blankets so they can curl up. Add in one of those soft blanket boxes for toy storage and so you have somewhere soft to perch when you are with them. Paper half way up the wall in the wall paper that kids can draw on, so they can decorate in whatever colour they like and you won't mind. A childs lift up desk, bookcase and some crazy lamps in weird colours. Then close the door, collapse on the sofa that you have moved, breathe a sigh of relief and thank your lucky stars that you have another room for the kids to go to. (Grab wine and pretend they aren't yours for half an hour! ;-) )

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

Is she ready for a cot bed yet? If so l would plan that in as opposed to the round cot and put it on the long wall opposite the window.

You could try a feather pendant, that lasts from baby to adult! The cot might look nice on a diagonal across a corner (but not pushed right in) maybe where the chair is so your baby isn’t too close to the radiator

Hi Emily - thanks.

I would be tempted by something like this. It brings that warmer colour in - it's diffused which works best in nursery and kids' rooms but also has the look and feel of the style you're going for. I also love that it has some width to it - helping with that balance we discussed xx
