Comments (10)I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Comments (5)If you want the look of the fireplace you posted but are scared that the dark grey will flood your room, you could paint just the one panel/side wall with the grey, paint the fireplace frame white, and then paint the rest of the room a more light neutral colour. It will also create a more contemporary look and create more focus to your fireplace. Alternatively you may feel more safe to paint the fireplace frame a neutral colour to match the neutral walls. When you are ready to replace the fireplace, I would suggest a bio ethanol burner as a simple solution with minimal DIY work and an option of different styles. Comments (74)Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. I can deal with below the mantle, it's from the mantle up that I can't stand. I have a very small budget so i don't think removing it is an option. An iron fireplace would have been considered old fashioned in the 1930s. The general principle seems to be that they would sometimes be used on upstairs fireplaces, but definitely not on downstairs ones. The possible exception would be low-budget houses like council housing.
I needed to replace two fireplaces that had already been ripped out in my house. For the upstairs one. I went for a 1907 all-in-one iron fireplace that (to my eyes) looks very minimal and 1930s. For downstairs, I got an insert that was reclaimed from a 1930s house. It was less than £100 and I love it (second photo). Both were off eBay. I did have to be patient to find one I liked in the right size.
I still haven’t finished getting it all installed, though! I will tile the hearth and inside the insert, so it ends up a bit like the first photo.
