Fireplace Help

Hi,

I have just bought a new house, and the fireplace needs to be updated (ideally, I would replace it with a new one, but that's not an option right now)......so in the mean time, I want to give the fireplace a bit of a face-lift.

The only thing in the room that will be staying is the floor (solid wood, so this will be sanded and re-varnished). Nothing else in the room will be staying.

What do you suggest I do with the fire-place? Just paint the wood? Open to all ideas, thanks

I'd paint the fireplace wood only. It has a lovely iron insert and black granite?? plinth which gives the room depth and texture. The colour will depend on your overall colour scheme but I'd keep in neutral - white, cream, grey. Farrow & Ball, Valspar, Little Greene have wide range of neutral colours to choose from. To start with the colour scheme, find your favourite piece - art, piece of fabric, cushion, rug etc and pull the colours out. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Karolina. You are correct in saying that it would only be the wooden part that I would paint (apologies if I wasn't clear originally!).

I saw this picture that I quite liked. The grey is quite dark, so it might be too dark for my room, but maybe if I kept the rest of the room neutral, it might work?

I really like the second one, but if you really like the wood panels then suit up for creativity - you can easily have the best of both worlds. Clear your wall at home and put the wooden panels there, you can then install the mantel on the panels just like in the second picture. Hope I helped :) Best wishes xoxo

You might consider buying ready made cabinets to fit in the space on both sides of the fireplace to hide all that extra paraphernalia :) ref pic for idea

I must admit I don't like it either, sorry.. Given the resurgence of mid century design you can probably sell it (or store it for next owner). I'd ring a salvage yard or try ebay. I don't know a lot about the 50s but it would appear tiled fireplaces were the style (I thought there were a lot of brick ones but apparently not!) but most people removed or had no fireplace. If you want to retain character I would suggest getting a really contemporary one rather than a fireplace from another period but that may just be me! Lovely room though

Hi Zoe , I had to take a second look to make sure this wasn't my photo! I have the same fireplace frame and our mirrors are similar! You have great taste ;) I can't offer any advise I'm afraid, but I'll be watching closely to see if something can be done. I wondered if it was possible to sand it down and paint it white or cream maybe, but the silver pieces may pose a problem. I'm tired of mine too. Here's hoping for some inspiration....

I think the photo you have attached of painted fireplace is lovely but then there's nothing wrong with the original fireplace. I'm saying that because I'm sitting opposite a similar wooden one and I'm just going to decorate the room around it. I'm too afraid I will regret painting lovely wood in the years to come!

Your room is lovely though so I'm sure it will look good whatever you choose to do.

If you want the look of the fireplace you posted but are scared that the dark grey will flood your room, you could paint just the one panel/side wall with the grey, paint the fireplace frame white, and then paint the rest of the room a more light neutral colour. It will also create a more contemporary look and create more focus to your fireplace.

Alternatively you may feel more safe to paint the fireplace frame a neutral colour to match the neutral walls.

When you are ready to replace the fireplace, I would suggest a bio ethanol burner as a simple solution with minimal DIY work and an option of different styles.

I have just painted (well had painted !) my walls in a very light grey nearly white & have had the fire surround painted a dark grey. It has a black hearth. Looks great.
