Help with design

How would you use this space more cosy and better. We're a family of 4 with 2 children one being a baby so we store some toys there. But I've never known what to do with that area. A bookcase maybe with different lighting. Problem is the wall as you can see is bumpy not flat.

I think you’re right about the lighting. It is glaringly bright. I would add more lamps. You could add floor lamps in various corners or more table lamps if you have surfaces to sit them on. Don’t bother putting on the ceiling lights unless you need that bright light. I would also add a nice big rug where the sofa is. It will instantly add cosiness. A taupe or biscuit shade would add warmth.

I totally agree with Sonia. The bumpy walls are beautiful and the texture of them feels warmer than smooth walls. As the floor is quite bleached looking I would avoid strong colours and inject as many natural materials into the space, this will make it feel much cosier. Jute rugs, lots of wicker, and no overhead lighting at all (unless looking for contact lenses).

I agree with a jute rug for the sofa and the lighting. I assume you were referring to the space to the left of the fire but could you not use the corner to the left of the window for a play space? It looks as if you could add wood shelves/bookcase on the flat wall and a canopy in the actual corner? The first pic may be a bit much but was ! I think the linen canopy in the 2nd pic would look great or muslin, organic cotton etc. There are loads of woven baskets around which are great for toy storage

I might also be tempted to paint the black lintels a taupe’ish shade and maybe change to a fabric blind?

Hi Saran stevens, as mentioned above softer lighting will create a cosier look. If you are up for painting then a softer neutral would work well to add warmth. A rug is always a great way to zone an area and it can add texture to the room.

I agree with all the comments on rugs and lamps. A quick question on your overhead spotlights: do they not have an additional setting? On ours we can flick between bright white and soft ambient white, it's a little switch on the light fitting itself, just under the cover. Most spotlights have these and it makes an instant difference

I can dim the lights but sometimes it creates a flicker. U have 2 lamps which does help. But going to do a toy corner first and see how it goes getting bits for it. I will post a pic once completed
