advice on opening up this space?

last year

I was considering closing off the sliding doors between living/dining and opening up a hallway where the hall/kitchen cupboards are next to the stairs?

Would I need to have people involved in this like structural engineer?

Main reasons

give me the wall space in the living room where double doors are
add clever storage solutions under the stairs

From looking at the layout, I suspect you would be reverting back to its original layout. Before going to a structural engineee for example, have you knocked on the walls to get an idea if they're solid or stud walls? If stud, you may be able to easily open them up.

Thank you. It’s a 1970s home. I read that not all load bearing walls are concrete and not all non load bearing walls are stud walls. Have bought it but haven’t moved in yet. Will be going for another visit and will have a listen.

I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! Art or mirror over the fire would work but I think art for colour/pattern.

Hi - its such a big and important project, i really think you need to sit down with a good kitchen designer and fully tease out your requirements and then look at every possible layout option. by sitting down with someone, they will draw each possible layout to scale in front of you and that way you will be able to see the pros and cons of each design. it makes decision making much easier best of luck with the project Barry

can that wall be remover between kitchen and table? if so could you put a narrow island in kitchen with a table/counter running off of it into current dining area. this would be alot narrower and allow for more storage unser the window plus open up ypur living space more. also furniture is very dark for a small space and table and chairs seem very big. could you paint ceiling white and light fixture a brighter colour.. all these things should make it seem bigger. the picture i have attached would be quitw narrow and just an idea i saw on houzz.

Hi, We're looking for some design options for a house we are planning to buy. We love the house location but the kitchen \ living area is proving to be a bit of a dilemma. There is a lot of glass in the kitchen area with full length windows to the front and rear which limits the options for layouts. We had a kitchen design prepared but are unsure if this really makes the best use of the space - it includes a corner dining area which while using the space feels a bit cramped for a family of 5. Due to the door position into the kitchen the builders design looks odd as they have placed the kitchen table right in line of sight of the front door so placing the table there seems a no no. We want to have an island in the kitchen ( its plumbed etc for one ) which we can have up to 5 high seats around which is in the design. We would like to have a TV in the room ( again limited places to put one on the walls due to the glass ) and would like some suggestions on layouts there also ( maybe the TV has to go ! ) - without something that completely blocks the access to the rear doors. Any thoughts gratefully received !

It looks like you could easily remove the doors from the kitchen store as there would/ should already be a lintel or other support above the door. So the main thing to check would be the wall between the two stores. As I said earlier I strongly suspect you're just reverting to the original design but always best to check with someone who can check the particulars on site.
