What do you call an open plan dining/living area?

So, my ipad is on the coffee table in front of the sofa, which is near the TV, in the area edged with french doors, next to the dining table that separates it from the kitchen - and I wanted my husband to fetch it upstairs. But neither of us ever know how to refer to it!! “It’s in the dining room/living room part of the kitchen“ I shout. It drives us mad. Our family are grown and gone so it seems a bit daft to call it the ’family room’. The ’den’ sounds a bit precocious (but maybe we’d get used to it after a while?) and because it’s open plan and clearly an area to relax and watch TV etc in, it seems wrong to call it a ’dining room’! What do you call it? So many houses are built like this these days that surely there’s a name for it by now? But so far I’ve failed to find one. Fingers crossed! :)

Three years ago, when we were moving into our house, there was a room for which we couldn’t think of a suitable name, and for the purposes of moving and unpacking we needed a name. Some bright spark suggested that, like the meeting rooms in the comedy spoof of the BBC ”W1A”, we name it after a famous comedian. Thus, three years later, we still have a room known to all my friends and family as ”Ronnie Corbett”. It’s not descriptive, but everyone knows what we mean 🤣🤣🤣

Ha ha, I get this! We've open plan, kitchen dining and TV. I call it the kitchen room 😍. What about the "telly room" not very sophisticated but as long as you know what you're talking about and don't get lost 🤣

We mostly refer to ours as the ‘living space’. We have a separate ‘living room’ which we call the snug as we mostly use it in autumn / winter with the fire going.

I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! Art or mirror over the fire would work but I think art for colour/pattern.

A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

😂😂 Jo - that made me smile! We have a sitting room area off the kitchen and years ago it was where the children had their Wii console. It has been the Wii Room ever since, despite not actually having a Wii for years. People look at us gone out when we reference the Wii room. The children are almost adults now and we’ve made it into a grown up sitting room - and we’re trying to call it the sitting room, but fail regularly.
