Paint Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Your ideas for wall colour for open plan living room-kitchen?

Hi everyone! I am moving in to a new flat, and am very undecided about what paint I should choose for my walls. The room is a west facing, medium sized room (about 30m2) living room and open plan kitchen. Below are some photos of my space.

I went with RAL 9003 Signal White for my top kitchen cabinets and TV unit and skirtings (which have not been put in yet), and Dulux Woodland Pearl 4 is the green tone of my lower cabinets. The countertops in the kitchen are quartz, off-white. The room has oak accents (such as the separator, or shelves in the TV unit). The floors are grey (which were originally in the flat and I haven't been able to change them). Oak tones and green tones will be my secondary/tertiary colours from the looks of it; I'll be re-using oak in my dining area and green tones in accents, such as pillows, curtains etc.

What would you suggest for a wall paint for such a room? I'm thinking of going with either Dulux or Sherwin-Williams which are the two most available paints where I am staying. Keeping it pure white seems that the room might be a bit too white, so I am leaning more towards greys because of the floor. What types of grey would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I really like that wall unit. Wall colour? I would go with a simple off white like Timeless by Dulux. It’s a nice warm tone. I do have Dulux Polished Pebble in my bedroom. It’s a pale grey. Can look a bit lilac in a dark room, but it looks like you have good light. I find that wooden divide very heavy looking and I would remove it. Just my opinion. First pic is Timeless and second is Polished Pebble.

I would go a splash of colour behind your shelves to create depth and interest in the room without being too much in your face. Il will also help to enhance the presentation of your collectible/books. Why not going if a muted green slightly darker than your lower kitchen cabinets?

Hi I notice your blind and lamp are Laura Ashley Pelham. Laura Ashley does a duck egg white, pale duck egg and duck egg paint colours. Maybe you could have the duck egg white as the predominant colour and use in both rooms but also use the pale duck egg or duck egg in the lounge, or add some wallpaper. Not sure grey walls would work with the kitchen units. Perhaps more of a taupe/warm grey would work in both spaces though.

I'm looking for advise on what colour to choose in my open plan kitchen/dining, living space. Ideally I'd like to have the kitchen/dining area in a different colour to the main living area. The kitchen is contemporary, white units and white worktop with metallic grey on appliances. I would like to paint the kitchen/dining walls grey but I don't want it too dark for the room and then have a paint colour for the living area that would suit/fit well with grey painted walls. A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

Hi, what a lovely "canvas" to begin! My late husband loved wood. I think it is too drab and have changed mine for glass and various off whites as the rooms are non-square here and the house is old but takes modern too. My gut feeling is that the way forward is to choose an exciting "theme" for downstairs first. Would you consider bright and airy sky, or tropical, or geometric, or bookish, or carnival, or countryside, what about a space rocket on the wall for the kids - it can be covered when they grow tired of it? And as it is it has my pet hate - a good window - wasted - with a grim reminder of housework - a sink in front of it instead of one out of sight with a strip light over it!!!!
