Design Dilemma Living Rooms

What to do with my boring living room...?

Hello All,

I am at a complete loss as to what to do with my small living room (11ft x 12ft at it's longest point)

- it doesn't have a fireplace (no chimney) and I am torn between getting a nice electric fireplace to add cosiness, or place a console/tv unit there and place the tv on that. I know my sofa (a navy blue) is too large for the place but I am stuck with that for a little while, I have nice curtains up -- floor length silver grey - and I have inherited a rather nice oak side table, but it just looks so soulless... if anyone has any ideas I would be really grateful - thank you!

I think the problem is that everything is around the edge of the room. Try a coffee table in the centre with something decorative on it.

It’s a nice room, just needs some cosy additions. As far as I can see there’s only one piece of art on the walls so I would add to that. You don’t have to spend a fortune, Etsy, The Range and Dunelm do some lovely prints. I also agree a nice wooden coffee table (try charity shops or Gumtree if funds are tight) in the middle would pull everything together. The cushions look a little deflated so get new innards to plump them out a bit, or even better get new ones in a cheerful colour like orange or yellow or anything that catches your eye. If you’re not mad on bright colours then some nice velvet ones in a soft grey would go well.

That wall paper doesn't go at all.. and you don't need wallpapers.. how about a cream shade on the fireplace part of wall with oxblood coloured (from your curtain flowers) horizontal band below mantel, while the rest of the walls be lilac? Ever considered stoenwork similar to your fireplace on that wall? Also lower the hung photographs.. should be at least four inches below the windows' top edge.. Your sofas are quite dark. they seem aubergine.. is there any way you can at least place one of the sofas across from a window so that light falls on it? right now it is in the shadows backed against the windows, therefore more dark (does it seem so when you're in the room too?) The mirror (though nice) is too solid and thick for the mantel. can it go on a clearer stretch of some wall? fourth wall? What is the fourth wall like? idk how the fourth wall is like but how about angling large sofa at 90 degrees to the window with the single seater also angled in the corner where the lamp is.. and place the side table with lamp infront of the window (i-e at the corner of the 'L' made by t he sofas).. If possible get lighter lamp shades (cream).. Love the cushions.. place two of these cushions on the single seater to relieve the large sofa.. Please turn the rug lengthwise along the length of the sofa.. get a glass/metal table (if tots allow) or cream ottomon as center table.. The TV is too large for the rack, no? The vase is being wasted under the tv.. Florals and stripes can be mixed depending on print.. but if you bring anymore florals in this room, it would be best to match the flower shape to those in the curtains. I find the curtains too short...

Help! how should I arrange my living room furniture?

I'd love some advice on how to arrange my living room furniture, starting with a completely blank canvas. The room will be used as a child-free retreat, mainly in the evenings for reading, watching movies and some entertaining. The window faces south east so it is bright during the day and looks over the front garden. We will probably get built ins around the fireplace to store books. I am thinking about getting a corner sofa oriented towards the tv on the right side of the fireplace but I am worried then that the wall opposite the window will just be blank. I'd like to put a chair there too but when you are entering the room I think it will appear to stick out a lot. What could I put on that wall? Could I orient the room the opposite way by putting the tv on the left of the fireplace or would that feel strange entering the room between couches? Would it be better if the door opened the opposite way? What size should the sofa be, given the room is 4.1x4.2m? I have attached a diagram of the room layout and what I am thinking currently. Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!

You have a fabulous bay window but to me the sofa looks crammed in there. I would move it to where the smaller chair is to give a greater sense of space. The room looks like it has a lot of furniture, so I wouldn't add any more. Yes to cushions and large pieces of art that work with the blue in the sofas. The plants seem too small compared with the sofas so either plaace them together or get a larger plant. Good luck!

Thank you so much, yes I will get prints, coffee table to pull together - I can't move the small sofa away from the bay as it is too large to put against the other wall, although I absolutely agree that it is too large there and obscures the window xx thank you all so much

I think you could manage a taller standing lamp to give your room height, or a taller one on the side table. Everything is rather low, including the lamp on the table. Adding a tall lamp will also help illuminate your new artwork of an evening without having stark overhead lights on.

In taking a closer look, could the table beside the chair become your coffee table? It is a good size, but still would allow space to move around. Would that make a difference to the 2 seater fitting on that wall? Then taking your chair into the bay?

I didn't even consider a tall lamp..and you are right, everything is rather low! I am off to dunhelm now to get a tall lamp and look at prints! I will try the table in the middle later on xx thank you

I agree with others, some art and a coffee table in the middle will have a massive impact. It's personal preference but I always find leather/leatherette sofas do make a room feel cold, if you don't love the sofa, maybe put a large throw over it? Or a mix of throws....scandi style.

Hi Fiona P, depending on the sizes of the sofa etc and layout of the room you could opt for a sideboard with the TV above to help add a focal point in the room.

That's so lovely of you to share your living room photos with me, I have bought the tall lamp, and will buy a tv cabinet (console style, like yours), and I need throws and colourful prints x I'll send photos after the changes - really appreciate everyone's comments - thank you
