Kitchens Dining Rooms

Wasted kitchen space?

All my units are at one end and dinning at other. I'm wondering if I could change - add units or an island as it seems like a dead space. Plants are all my mum's as she moving house. 🙂

Thanks everyone. AMN - The lighting in the photo isn't great - the walls and venetian blinds are both white and the green is a wallpaper. I've a TV on one side and radiator on the other side of the wall but I do like the idea of painting it a different colour. What do you mean by "because the sectional is too big for the space already" thanks! Dar Eckert - like your suggestion of introducing another colour, I was thinking about aubergine but again it could be over modern and not the slightly warm vibe I'm looking for - what do you think? Carolyn - thanks for posting the rug, going to look it up and see about shipping costs etc to Ireland from that site. Really happy with the rooms but we've just had a baby and I want a bit more of a cosier feel with her around whilst still keeping with my modern twist!! Long post, sorry!!!

I am sorry to say you don't have room. You are only giving yourself 36" in front of the ovens and only 31" for passage on the opposite side and 42" is not enough between the island and the sink. You might find a smaller 30" wide x 48" moveable stainless steel prep table and placed in the opposite direction, it might work for additional counter surface but not give you the seating you would like.

Wasted Garden Space into Patio

This particular area of the garden was cleared from overgrown shrubs and trees. However, the space was still not being used and was rather unsightly. It is a suntrap for the morning and afternoon sun. The ideal spot for a little seating area and the potential to be a beautiful space. We decided to construct steps, a small sandstone patio and surround it with some colourful low growing planting. And one year on it is looking great...!

Hi Louise. I can see your predicament. You could add an addtional 600mm wide unit to the projected counter behind the fridge. If you extend that too far it will compromise the ciruclation as you have a unit on the adjacent wall. You should typically leave at least 1m as best practise. If you wanted a quirky alternative, you could have floor to ceiling cabinets Infront of the door way on the left with a hidden door into that space. Hopefully this helps

Personally I don’t think there’s a need, or room for any more kitchen units from the photos, unless you’re planning to remove the table? I like the unit you have behind the table but if you desperately need more storage, maybe a longer sideboard type unit could go there? Personally I like having the distinction between kitchen style units on one side and then more ‘relaxed’ living / dining style furniture on the other.

That’s how the space is intended to be ie kitchen one end and dining the other. There’s no room for additional units.
