Distance between back of sofa and dining table?

last month

I have a tight open plan space we are about to renovate. (27'10" for a kitchen/dining/snug area) If I have a sofa backed to a dining table (so it can face the TV), how much clearance should I have for seating? I'm thinking 2 feet? Or is that way too tight?
And a massive thank you to the Houzz community which has been indispensable the last couple of weeks!

I've just asked a similar question! Allow a min of 90cm between the table edge and another surface/furniture, ideally 1m though.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. I contemplated going with a different lighter sofa colour but practicality won in the end!

I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.

Maybe an L shaped, with no back on one part of the L, this backless part in front of the windows so the view/light isn't blocked. Its hard to tell if you can fit a 2 seater in as opening to RT would be blocked also... so maybe 2 neater comfy chairs ...you might fit a love seat in. Sometimes a skinny console table with a lamp etc is nice to have against the back of the sofa as it can help define the 2 different areas.. just my thoughts. I think that's concrete floor? you can draw your dimensions before you buy to see if they'll work..

No trouble i love doing it. i think the smaller table works better too, central to the middle window and flexible access to the island seating.

i was thinking the middle window, if budget allows, could be patio doors to reduce traffic through your kitchen area?

I’m thinking of combining the middle window and the slider to make a big slider. So that would push the opening over that way as well?

Do katlucy's first drawing, but turn the dining table round so that it is parallel with the island - surely that provides more space on each side to walk past to patio doors? and more space between table and each of the island and the sofa area.
