Lighting Design Dilemma Dining Rooms

Installing a false window

I compromised the build of my GFE. I ’lost’ my dining room window to creat a wetroom/bathroom. It doesn’t now have any natural light. I removed the wall between the living an dining room, but it’s still very dark. I’m thinking to create a ’false’ window with LED lights behind. Has anyone done something like this?

Might be similar money to put in an extra window.

Thank you Jonathan. I can’t pt a window in where the old dining room window was, as it’s now covered by a new wall to make space of a downstairs wetroom. Has anyone eveer put a ‘window‘ in the wall between a room and hallway? Did it increase the natural light into the room?

I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Take a good look and visualize day and night views creating with mirrors designed into a "today" style and look.

This might sound a bit like being on the fence given the advice you've had already... How about a mid to dark grey ( less contrast than black), RAL 7022 is a favourite of mine (warmer grey), or look at a green grey, as something that will have the colour of the olive, with a good amount of contrast against the white render, (you won't have the warm rich colours of the brickwork as in the photos above (which the olive looks good against)). If you are painting the timber windows you would do well to look at microporous opaque stains to reduce your on-going maintenance. A benefit of aluclad composite windows is colour outside can be factory supplied different to the interior finish. Hope this might help. Regards, Nick

I too, am wondering why you were refused velux windows? Here in Scotland you are not allowed to convert an attic room to "livable space" - that is any room, other than a store room, without an escape window of a certain size, velux or other, due to fire regulations. Not sure where you live - in the UK? and what your regs would be? Again, I don't think you are allowed to open up a kitchen ceiling due to fire regs, this would obviously be a real danger in case of fire, when it would sweep upwards very quickly if a section was open. You obviously need to consult a surveyor or building engineer as a first step. If not done the right way, it can cause havoc when you come to sell, or even worse, if there ever were a fire.

Our 60’s house has an internal window between one of the bedrooms and the hall - there’s no other natural light source into the hallway other than through open doors. It does let some natural light onto the landing but tbh I’d rather not have it. I had it reglazed in a more modern glass so it looks better than it did. Our next door neighbours replaced theirs with a wall - to me it’s much darker than ours so it must serve its purpose.
I saw a post on here about “slot” windows the other day. At first I thought it was a typo but no, they’re a thing! They’re very, very narrow, long, slim windows a bit like clerestory windows. Could they work on your wet room wall?
