window colour advice, bay windows, wet pebble dash
renovating a 1930's detached house per attached photo, and really struggling to select the windows. We obviously have flexibility to paint the house, so can use some discretion on the window colours. The current decision is to go with wood windows to the front, and aluclad to the rear. We have existing original art-deco stained glass which can't really be retained as is for various reasons, but we plan to replicate it in the opes along the front bottom bay, but again have some flexibility on the colours of the the stained glass. The current recommendation is go with white wood windows, but we feel the overall look could be very bland, unless we change the house colour, and can't decide what colour we'd paint it. The fascia is black. Any thoughts?? We are toying with going olive green, but it feels like a big risk..

Comments (13)I have a tile roof, and they make going mod kind of difficult, but they do add charm.With the sort of earthy color scheme i posted before, you could paint the bricks with masonry paint in a paler tone like sw ancient marble or wash them with a more grayed green so they add taupe tones if you do the chimneys the same - but really, the color resonates with the roof, so use it as color inspiration. Look at 100 year old homes with lines like this and their window mullions - if the upper elements and sides of the larger picture window had muntins / grilles, they would be more charming. Still, you are aiming at retro farmhouse with the muntins, not necessarily authentic historic . . but that gives you some concept about how to go and search for inspiration. You don't have to tear out the entire ramp - could widen "pad/porch" to left and put stairs right down the front depending on car park / depth to roadway design - have your ramp and stairs and just take off the old handrail too . . great for universal design when selling tho railing is not attractive....See MoreNeed advice for front door

Comments (25)Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Comments (0)Looking for help in choosing colours for Windows and render. It’s a 1930s semi. We’ll be externally insulating it and looking for a textured wet dash finish. We love our white plinth and intend on reinstating it. I’m not a fan of the anthracite grey that’s in at the moment, so will probably favour a lighter colour window. Our window supplier has suggested RAL 9002. Not sure on wet dash render colour, off white/light grey. Any thoughts? We’ll be adding a side/rear extension too which will have a smooth render finish....See More
PRO10 years agoWe live in an 1850's Victorian Cottage We have cream coloured rendering and have recently had our replacement windows, which were a dark brown UPVC powder coated in a pale olive green. I think the transformation is fabulous. I liked it so much i also had the conservatory done. Good luck with your project, best regards, Nicky
