First time decorating/furnishing help.

I am decorating and furnishing a bedroom for the first time. I have never had any input into that kind of thing until now. I have painted the walls a pale, ash green, the carpet is white/cream and the furniture (a large chest of drawers and a bedside table) are two tone—white with a medium shade wood top and then silver handles. I'm not sure though what colour curtains and what ceiling light shade would suit though. Thinking maybe darkish, vivid red? Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be very grateful for advice.

Oh, the room is small as well, about the length of a single bed one way and then the same plus a bit the other way.

Pyracantha (firethorn) is evergreen, with beautiful white flowers in spring followed by vibrant red or orange berries in fall. It lends itself easily to espalier--ing. You can make as geometric/formal (and flat) a shape as you like -- or leave it to a natural bushy habit. If you choose to paint your wall first, I'd whitewash it so that it blends in with the neighbor's house. Together they will create an innocuous, even shabby chic backdrop for your planting.

Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Thanks.

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Hi. I'm not that keen on the paper with the rest of the room, it doesn't look bad at all but it doesn't look stunning either imo. Everything else looks to be more of a greige? I'd look at the same paper in truffle, sable, dark linen or even the pewter may work ( hard to tell colours on screen so would get samples of all!). I agree with the others, would go for plain bed linen and add pattern in cushions and/ or throw. It looks as if a chalk pink would work best with the greige. Maybe a chalky white for the remaining furniture. You could also break up the window ŵall by adding a trim and maybe Pom poms to the bottom of the blind. A little antique gold for accessories, lights etc would also work well.

Given your furniture, you could maintain the light feel by putting up a linen texture lined curtain and then pick up the silver in your light fitting.

I don't think vivid red would work with your wall colour. A nice complimentary colour would be lilac or powder blue.

I agree withkazzh, neutral linen will look lovely. Red is a tad too bold I think for your lovely, gentle green and off white furniture.

Yeah, I'm really lost with colour matching and it doesn't help that I'm a little fussy. I can still change the colour on the walls though, it's just been primed and I haven't bought any paint yet. I don't like purple, pink or yellow though. Not really keen on blue being on the walls either. I love red, green, maybe neutrals and browns depending on the shade. Just having a hard time pairing the curtain and wall colours in a way that also suits the furniture.

You might find it easier to find some curtains and bedding you like first, then decide on a wall colour.
