Patio advice...

Hello! We have a patio at the back of a terraced house. Would love to do a quick update on it as it is very tired and unused. Thinking to:
- paint the fence a warm white
- paint the walls a bright white
- bring the same table to one side
- left corner bench and hanging mirror/behind
- potted plants peppered in corners
- winding plants on back fence
- BBQ stored at the back right
Anyone got any first thoughts that say a big no to the above, if so please share :)

I'd paint the fence black... it will make any greenery and flowers really stand out and give a wow factor, as well as string lights. It would make a much nicer contrast to white walls too

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

hi all, i'm finalising floor plans for single storey new build. We like the layout generally but there are a few niggling things that we need advice on. 1. The sliding door /patio doors are in the family room- there is no door out from kitchen. Would people recommend having this in Kitchen OR Leaving it as is in the family room. 2. The hotpress /linen store size? is it too small? and also it's position accessing through utility. would people recommend this or not? 3. The exterior look has a mono pitch roof on the kitchen diner family room- would people recommend full height in kitchen diner and then reduce for family room? or vice versa. 4. The width of the kitchen family diner is 4.8m- is this enough to allow for island or should we consider going to 5m deep? 5. In general the house is North facing, do people feel that we are maximising light through use of windows and position of living areas? ( that's v general question-but i feel more could be done) I'd appreciate all opinions advice as I really don't want to make any obvious mistakes that I'll regret. thanks very much.

Hi, renovating an old house and building a new extension on (new part in green). Struggling to design the open plan layout. We want the kitchen near the utility and will be changing the sliding doors to the back of the house and it will make sense for where our patio area will be. Any ideas? Thanks

The thing it lacks is plants. You mention pots, but they do take a bit of maintenance during dry weather. They need watering every evening when it is dry. You could remove some paving slabs around the edges, add compost and then plant. Then water in every day, unless it is raining.

Who actually owns all 3 sides of the fence? If you own all the fence then you can paint but legally if you are not the owners of all 3 sides then you need to get permission from the owner.

I can see that it’s overlap so if you do paint it the colour may dribble through.

Hi there,

I agree with Tanya. Dark coloured walls and fences would actually work better there as it will make the boundaries receed and make your patio look bigger.
Also agree with Sonia. This patio really lacks greenery, and I don't think that pots dotted around would work well (appart from being hard work to maintain as sonia mentioned, pots dotted around tend to make a space look a bit disjointed and incoherent). I would go for either propper brick built raised beds (maybe with some seating inbuilt in them) or big trough planters. Would try to make the planting spaces as wide as possible and maybe use them to create sessions and a journey through the patio (obvs it would all depend on the actual dimensions of your patio). Also, investing in planting space would bring you the possibility of adding tall plants that would bring height to this space (which it lacks as well, in my opinion). My best advice is to really take your time thinking about it before you start doing the works. With small spaces there's not much room for error and every little area should be well utilised and thought of.
