5 x 5.5m2 rear extension ideas

Hey there!!

Having a rear extension on the back of our 1930s semi in the next couple of months and really wanting to see how much others have been able to fit in a similar space (5 x 5.5m).

We already have a roomy dining room which will run onto the new kitchen and then also hoping to have a seating area/snug in the extension with a TV (to the right of the extension)

It will be a galley style kitchen (units all along one wall) with an island.

Current house design attached (sorry for the covey line to illustrate the extension). The utility/bathroom area will be knocked down and become a part of the extension.

No advise, but more of a question: Where did you want your kitchen plus island? And do you want a downstairs loo and utility/bootroom?

And have you spoken to a structural engineer yet about the loadbearing wall between your dining and kitchen?

HI Keerthi, the project turned out well, apart from the main house, I built a 9m x 6m building which I split in 2. The front 4.5m x 6m area is used for pressuried water system, gas burner and a multi fuel burner all to one side and fuels to the other. The is a door going into rear of building the same size. Theres a 3m wide by 1.2m window to the back of the bulding looking out into the garden with a glass door to the side. Its a fabulous plastered games room and may be used as a music practice room at some stage. There is a 600m floored attic for storage. I didnt get any feedback off site but still get great ideas for finishes within Houzz. Regards

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Masmccar76 put these photos on because she thought people would like to see a genuinely lovely transformation of her garden. Instead there have been some downright nasty comments. By all means make comments but keep them constructive. Houzz is all about is sharing ideas, not about being nasty

Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. Thanks for that! Was your extension a simile size?

We haven’t spoken to a structural engineer yet. We don’t want to knock the wall down between the kitchen and dining as we’d love to convert that into a small office, and downstairs loo with a utility cupboard essentially.

God I’m new to this. Want the kitchen and island in the extension. We have a south facing garden and I am constantly in the kitchen so want it to be there for sure!

It's your floorplan. With a 5x5m extension. And the wider kitchen bit removed, other wall extended to old utility wall (just passed the 3 kitchen windows), as it seems to carry the bedroom-bathroom wall.

Is your mind set on an island?

And is the office for working from home and do you have kids around?
