Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Rooms

Fireplace help needed please

Hi all,

We're having some work done to our house. We had a through lounge/dining room which has now been separated and the lounge will be a smaller snug.

We did have quite a large, old and dated fireplace with a non-working gas fire which we've had removed. The plan was to have a slate hearth and oak mantel however the opening to the fire is a lot lower than we thought (didn't think to be honest) and we think the oak beam will look a little odd (see second picture - my artists impression!).

We aren't sure about getting the builder to knock it out any bigger but aren't sure about leaving the whole chimney breast clear. We are having a joiner put in small cupboard and chunky floating shelves either side in the alcoves. We thought maybe a nice oversized mirror to fill the space?

Suggestions and inspiration would be gratefully received as we don't have any vision!

It's a relatively simple job to raise the height of the opening. I would go ahead and get it done. You will get nicer proportions from a bigger opening

Yes it does look a bit squat, doesn’t it? I would make it double the height, then you can put the mantle above it. A mirror would finish it off nicely.

I think you should paint the walls grey. Grey and red are fabulous together. If you need to because the room is small, put a darker grey on the wall where the fireplace is and a softer one everywhere else. Use the cream color of the fireplace in your throw pillows, rug, art etc as a accent color. Seems the room is small so the TV above the fireplace might be a good choice. The right chandelier and sconces will improve lighting. Add some table lamps. Chrome will make the lighting pop. What is the floorplan going to be with the new furniture?

The back splash is certainly taste specific. If you are going to remodel in the spring, I certainly wouldn't spend a lot though. I have never done this myself, but I am pretty sure you can paint the tiles. That would be a huge improvement. Here is a blog that addresses that project. A guy removed my existing fire place and did the installation. It was fire boarded and sealed around where the stove sits. I had a paint mixed at the local dulux centre "slightly off white" diamond hard acrylic eggshell don't used oil based paint. This was painted inside the chimney before the stove was installed I used a small roller 3/4 coats. Front wall is again from the dulux centre Flat white emulsion. The whole look is very plain but if you like the look, dress the walls with tasteful art and a nice vase or two, It works for me.

I would go for a stone colour so not too dissimilar to what you've got. Little Greene does a good stone colour too but will work out a bit expensive. This is Oxford stone by farrow and ball. If you were doing the windows and front door then maybe an old white with door and windows in french grey

Bear in mind that If opening it up, you'll be limited by the size of the original builders opening, i.e. the lintel position.
