Hallways Before & After Design Dilemma

Dark hall, awkward plugs, brown staircase.

Dear people, have seen some brilliant ideas. Can anyone help....what practical, functional table/console to put in dark hall, old brown wood - tempted to leave it all empty to keep the light.
Tempted to go symmetrical to bring balance but maybe too crowded?
Has to be light - have very simple taste, easy dusted, easy kept, have offspring.
Maybe just some plants and no storage?

Photos will help. What daylight does it get, if any? Most houseplants need daylight.

Light mornings, then again afternoons. Northern House. Sunny plants won't be happy, you're certainly right.
Will try post pix if sideboards I considered.
Not sure about the symmetrical option, but anything gs with height differences makes it all feel out of synch, somehow. Thank you for your time and opinions!

Thanks all very much for your comments. I just looked at your link carolins for striped carpets, they are all fab but are ALL vertical. Has anyone ever seen horizontal ones? It would be a very expensive mistake to make if it didn't work out, especially here in Ireland as all home decor items are overpriced. Need to paint the dark stairwell too, no bannisters, just wall. Would love to be adventurous with colour but always seem to stick with the 'safe' neutral options.

I love dark walls and I think your hall with the shiny floors and the right finish on the wall make it special. You already have the wrought iron, which definitely dictates a certain look. I hesitate to recommend a specific color from my monitor, but look at the BM colors in the 1037’s through the 1078’s and see if there is something there which looks good with the tile.

Please, please, please, don't paint any of the wood. You have a beautiful setting for mid century modern décor. I can agree with removing the carpet from the stairs, however I would just want to add a jute floor covering for the stairs after. The light fixtures should probably both be changed. You even have a lovely roomy space in your foyer. I always recommend starting with the foundation of the room, which is the floor covering. Kilim, ikat, Persian or Oriental would be my choice. I would think minimalist would be very fitting in this space.

A plant to the right as you come through the door would be nice, on the wall with the mirror a console table with a lamp and mirror above would bring it to life a bit. The position of the switches may be an issue but things can be moved. I have a reasonably sized hall and have put some quite strong artwork in which relates to the colour of a rug I bought on ebay. If you just had one colour that you could repeat it may help to bring it to life. Emma Mason prints in Eastborne sells original Twentieth Century lithographs etc, a bit of artwork always makes a difference. This is mine.

That is absolutely lovely looking. Had considered console under mirror and plant but thought it might be off balance. Yours looks great. Also, the mini table with a small pic right at the entrance gave me an idea. Thank you for replying. New to Houzz.
