Position of open shelving on kitchen layout

Hi, we're trying to work out where to put some plywood open shelves in our kitchen (or not to have them at all). We'd use the shelves for a few items like plants to add a bit more interest.
Below are some options we're looking at. It would be good to get anyones thoughts on which work best. (ignore the island unit as that will change).

3 years agoi’d go for option 4. You could even stretch it further across the sink and store nice crockery.

You may want to turn your kitchen into a open-plan design in which case a area to relax, and room for a sofa and TV may be important. Ultimately, it’s your kitchen, and the most important thing is how you and your family are going to use the space. Design the space and features (must have items) around the activities that will take place in your kitchen, and most of all ensure you match your kitchen to your lifestyle. Step 4: Finer details As you become clear on the demands you will be placing on your new kitchen make a wish-list of your preferred products and materials. From a practical perspective consider what you will require from you appliances, worktops, storage solutions and sink and tap. You may already have a look in mind of the kitchen in terms of colour, style and finish, but it’s a great idea to gather ideas from magazines or websites. Enjoy creating a scrap-book with cuttings of furniture, flooring, taps, even paint finishes, crockery or vases- anything that inspires you. Even just images with right ‘feel’. Step 5: Budget With a kitchen the cost of key elements such as appliances, units and worktops can vary dramatically. For instance, appliances may account for a considerable percentage of the total cost of the kitchen, however if branded top-end ovens, hobs and extractors are specified this percentage can escalate dramatically to become the most expensive element of the project. Similarly the choice of worktop materials and door materials may increase the budget substantially. There may be areas of the project where you may have to be prepared to consider a compromise to stay within your budget. Step 6: Layout As a rule of thumb this will be dictated by the existing dimensions of you room, or you may be lucky enough to be planning to extend. If you are extending you may wish to consider an open-plan kitchen to seamlessly link through to the living area. Comments (2)Hi Helen, The fridge position is ideal so I suggest you move the radiator to the other side of the door and turn the door so its opens back against the fridge. This will increase the feeling of space in the whole dining area. You won't regret the length of your breakfast bar so I wouldn't worry about the gap sizes, 1200 is an ideal but 1000 is more than sufficient. Could you turn the door into the utility so that it opens inwards and not into the kitchen area? It would eliminate having to manoeuvre round the door when open and reduce congestion in the kitchen especially with traffic flow past the end of the breakfast bar. Comments (4)A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? Comments (5)Sink in island - bear in mind that it could look messy unless you are meticulous. Hob in island - can be social to chat to those seating while you cook. Perhaps think about induction. They are just food for thought - best to discuss with your kitchen design company if you think they might work better for you....See More

3 years agoThanks everyone, we've adjusted the design as shown below, i.e. option 4 but with the shelves extended so they are also above the sink. We've flipped the island unit so that you can look at the garden while sitting on stools. We've also widened the island slightly so we can have two stools at the end and space for an additional cupboard, which eases the pressure from losing a cupboard where the additional open shelving has gone.
