Kitchens Design Dilemma

Mixing kitchen cabinet styles

We are building an extension to our house to include a larger kitchen and open plan dining and living room. In our kitchen we are having a large island (3.5 metres long). On the back wall we will have tall kitchen cabinets. We love the look of flat island units but prefer shaker style for the tall units. Can you mix styles? Would anyone like to share their opinions on this?

HI... always lots of decisions when building a new house. When working with a neutral color palette- adding a material that provides contrast is always visually interesting. If you plan on adding red accessories- gray would certainly work. You could use a solid color quartz material or even Vermont soap stone which is inherently gray. Shades of brown with red and cream is also quite pretty. I just snapped a photo mixing some materials from a project in front of me-- this is arrowroot (the stone) and you can see on the fabric motif how pretty it is-- the brown and red next to each other in the fabric pattern. I would still do an island. You have the space. I hate having my stove against the wall. You get boxed in and forget about two people working at once. How about stove in island, fridge all the way down to the right? You don't want the fridge to interrupt work space. You will end up w two too-small spaces instead of one nice functional one. We had an island with a downdraft Jenn-air stove-worked quite well for most needs.

Fads come and go. Pick what you love, not what is in style. Make your home yours. Take samples to your home of all the materials you think your may like, cover colors that you are not going to keep with some white paper and live with the samples for a few days. The lighting in your home and the other colors that you have in your kitchen and in the adjoining rooms will guide your selection. I have done this often and every time I walk into a room with samples I find myself drawn to one or another consistantly and the decision is made based on what feels good to me.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
