New kitchen..contrast island or not? HELP!!!

Building a new house and at kitchen design stage. We have layout, cabinet door style, main cabinet colour (almond/cream), porcelain tiles (crema marfil/cream with grey flecks) and appliances all picked. But I want to be a bit different and contrast my island, and have a grey colour in my head.

We are in rented accommodation at the minute and have gathered a collection of red accessories and have red pieces that are sentimental.

Am I making things too busy with putting red, cream and grey in the mix?

HI... always lots of decisions when building a new house. When working with a neutral color palette- adding a material that provides contrast is always visually interesting. If you plan on adding red accessories- gray would certainly work. You could use a solid color quartz material or even Vermont soap stone which is inherently gray. Shades of brown with red and cream is also quite pretty.
I just snapped a photo mixing some materials from a project in front of me-- this is arrowroot (the stone)
and you can see on the fabric motif how pretty it is-- the brown and red next to each other in the fabric pattern. Hope the photo came through.

thanks for posting the photos. First, I feel like there is a mix of styles in the design that aren't really complementing each other. The waterfall walnut frame around the frig and wall oven areas is VERY modern. But the rounded front cooktop/bar, the divided light glass front cabinet doors, and molding on the upper cabinets are very traditional -- maybe even a bit 'cottage'. The looks are fighting each other IMHO. Also, I would reconsider the placement of the wall ovens -- they seem very crowded back in that corner. And the range hood going to the ceiling but the cabinets stopping short looks odd to me. Maybe a different hood with a narrower chimney would look better. And, is that the dishwasher on the island? --- Yikes -- I would want that right next to the sink (otherwise you'll be dripping water all over the floor everytime you load it)

Where is your refrigerator? If you move your stove over is there room for a refrigerator and a stove? You will need at the very least 12" on each side of your stove. Your sink can either go by the window or on the island. Another option is to put the stove on the outside wall and move the window over. If you do this you can put the sink on the island. The refrigerator can go on the back wall and you might have room for a 24" wide pantry at the end next to the door and the refrigerator can go next to the pantry.

I think I would have one set off steps down and move the dividing presses to the side where your sink is, making it a peninsula. That would make for a nice L shaped banquette seating area where your blank wall is, and the gallery backdrop would be great there. You could also have a nice long table as opposed to the small square one. I also hope you don't mind me saying that I think you need to reconsider the placement of your hob. It's right beside a door which will be awkward and you have your back to the room when entertaining. You will have such a nice kitchen that you should make the most of it for entertaining. Even you consider putting it on the island facing the dining area?

hi all, i'm finalising floor plans for single storey new build. We like the layout generally but there are a few niggling things that we need advice on. 1. The sliding door /patio doors are in the family room- there is no door out from kitchen. Would people recommend having this in Kitchen OR Leaving it as is in the family room. 2. The hotpress /linen store size? is it too small? and also it's position accessing through utility. would people recommend this or not? 3. The exterior look has a mono pitch roof on the kitchen diner family room- would people recommend full height in kitchen diner and then reduce for family room? or vice versa. 4. The width of the kitchen family diner is 4.8m- is this enough to allow for island or should we consider going to 5m deep? 5. In general the house is North facing, do people feel that we are maximising light through use of windows and position of living areas? ( that's v general question-but i feel more could be done) I'd appreciate all opinions advice as I really don't want to make any obvious mistakes that I'll regret. thanks very much.

We just did a kitchen reno and did a very dark island (surrounding cabinets were painted Eddie Bauer Wicker with Cambria Sussex countertop) with a creamy quartz top (Zodiaq so we could get a wider slab). I love having the contrast!

Red works with cream and gray. I think the low-impact visual of the cream on cream with a slight bit of interest with a gray island would do very well with punches of red!

What is your countertop?
