House extension dilemma..help!
Hi,
We bought a Semi-detached house few years ago which already has been extended at the back using timber in 1995. This extension as fibreglass GRP roof. Now, we are looking to make this extension have open plan and remove the wall between the kitchen and family room and add a skylight.
But many builders we discussed this job has advised us to remove the whole existing extension and build a new extension from scratch since the old one may not be in line with current building regulations.
We are in a dilemma whether to live with the walls between the Kitchen and family room or spend lot of money to get the whole extension redone.
Did anyone here face this issue? Please advise if you have any suggestions.

That looks like a lovely layout I really like the open plan but our driveway around the house will come from the left side so that's why we had thought of addiing the extension to the right. I'm sure we could use your idea on the right side and it would still throw in plenty of light. Regarding the rooms: the long room to the right is the current kitchen which is currently very dark and cold, the small room behind this is the utility, the two rooms to the left of this are a front living room and back lounge. Comments (5)The "L' shape which extends further on the right will give you marginally more light into it - but this depends on the design of the roof and glazing - which is vitally important to the end result. I would consider putting pocket doors from the lounge into the kitchen (keeping the size as is) to allow the afternoon sun to be seen from the kitchen. This space might be a better option for the playroom - depending on the age of your children etc. I would put kitchen on the right hand side. Could you put a door from hall into the bike store so you don't have to go through the kitchen? Consolation prize for this orientation is that the back right hand side of your rear garden will hold the Summer evening sun the longest - so thats where to put the BBQ!...See MoreLakshmi Mann

Could be a nice idea (open conversation area, short walk to the table), but still leaves the centre of the house somewhat unused? A sofa and tv could go there just fine, but it'll never be a bedroom for example. Not suggesting you should focus on far future scenarios, I'm simply trying to envision functions, practicality and such.Lakshmi Mann thanked rinked
