I have decided I need drawers rather than cupboards to enable me to access everything in my kitchen. My kitchen has been in situ for 8 years and I am not in a position to have a new one. Can drawers be retro fitted? I think I would need 8-9 plus maybe a pullout larder.
I think you probably can convert your cabinets, but you'd need the same colour fronts, or a very contrasting colour if you can't find the same fronts. Or all new fronts. You could ask your kitchen supplier if it is a possibility. Another option would be to have pull out drawers installed behind the doors. Like these:
Yes you can swap a door for a drawer. All base cabinets are the same height so you just need to decide how many drawers you want in each unit. Some have 2 x 355mm high pan drawers, others have 3, 4 or even 5 drawers. You would need to buy new fascias, drawer boxes of the size in relation to the height of the drawer you plan to swap to, runners and new handles.
It’s a bit of a fiddly job if you’re not into DIY so I would recommend getting a kitchen fitter in to do the job.
Thank you Daisy, some good suggestions there. There is no question of it being a DIY job - I cant get down to the cupboards let alone do anything when I got there! I just want to find ways a) to convert cupboards to drawers and b) to do it on a limited budget.
Also thank you Carolina for doing that research. That sounds like a very reasonable way of converting the cupboards and will certainly go straight into my ideas book
I would keep your doors and go for pull out drawers as @Carolina suggested. You could also make your door into one deep bottom drawer with additional internal drawers inside. I’ve seen this done with an IKEA kitchen.
Thank you Sonia. It's nice to have support for my views. Isn't it great that I have had such useful answers. All I need now is someone competent to fit them!
