Blank corner space in 4 level split kitchen

We just moved into a home with an older kitchen which we are going to live with for a while but there is also this large empty area on the side which looks down to the next level of the house. (4 level split) It's wasted space as the kitchen is not large, does not have an island, so what would you incorporate here to give more counter space? With the see through railing on one side I'm not sure I can do something like a corner bench which I originally was thinking about and close off some of that space?
