Advice on redesigning garden
I want to make this garden into a pretty one, with flowers and shrubs, but also a place near the house for my young dog to use. Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Comments (16)Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. Comments (9)HI Sophie, Thanks so much for the suggestions. We would never have thought of moving the sink - I guess you get used to things where they have always been! Just so I can understand and visual where you suggest moving things to, when you say move the fridge down to opposite the pennisula, do you mean near the entry to the kitchen (where the small three cupboards are shown on the drawing above) or where the cooktop is currently? I know one concern that my mum has is that the width of the fridge will jut out too far into the kitchen, taking up too much room. I've attached a picture with dimensions on it. Comments (1)I would follow the curving line of the lovely brick sett edging to the beds and have the same brick edging whatever flag stone you choose . This way you can continue the lovely curve and have your patio wider/ deeper on whichever side you choose to have the table and bbq. Grass the rest...I 'very just seen the date on this question. Comments (3)Hi - its such a big and important project, i really think you need to sit down with a good kitchen designer and fully tease out your requirements and then look at every possible layout option. by sitting down with someone, they will draw each possible layout to scale in front of you and that way you will be able to see the pros and cons of each design. it makes decision making much easier best of luck with the project Barry...See More

3 years agoYou need to know where the sun is at different times of the day. So you can figure out whether you want another seating area, maybe to catch the evening sun or whether you want an area to sit in the shade. It is also useful information for choosing plants. Do you need sun loving plants or plants that tolerate more shade.
I would also incorporate one or two smaller trees. Maybe a multi-stemmed Amelanchier or birch or some other decorative tree to give height, shade, some privacy and interest. Or a pergola.
