Garden Design/Plant Advice

I have decided I need to do something with the border under my bay window. The bush on the right next to the door has spread and is a bit out of control. The bush in the left of the picture has a disease and has lost a lot of leaves and is dead so needs removing. I have two rose bushes which I hate. I feel like I need to start with a clean canvas and replant the area. I have no idea where to start. I feel that I need to add colour and variety. Is there anyone out there that could given me some advice. I can’t afford a landscape gardener. Thanks

Is it a sunny or shady spot as that will dictate what you could plant?

The area is sunny and the soil is always very dry.

Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. Lavender would look nice. Hidcote Blue is a nice deep blue. Hebes would also look nice. They are small rounded evergreen shrubs with white or blue flowers in summer. Hardy Geranium Rozanne is blue, small and pretty, 2nd pic. Add some orange Crocosmia for a bright splash of colour, 1st pic. Agapanthus are a beautiful blue, 3rd pic.

This is quite pretty too but it’s mostly roses and osteospermum with rosemary on the right.

I like the plants Sonia suggested. We can't see the rest of the garden, but I have a feeling it would benefit from some clear shapes. I mean, if you for example give the lawn a clear shape, maybe a circle, and plant around it, it will often make a huge change and look so much better. And it's such a simple thing to do. But I'm only speculating based on the part where the grass meets the path.

Also, add loads of organic matter to the soil if you plant your new plants. Lots and lots of compost works wonders.
