Paint suggestions please

i Have Cole & Sons Woods in linen and cream wallpaper on one wall in my kitchen and I’m trying hard to find a paint colour to match it. Creams all feel too overwhelmingly creamy, but it’s north-facing so not a very bright room ... could anyone suggest a good paint colour to complement it, please?

Hi Jan,

You may have to pick out a grey tone which reflects the color of the bark as a wall color - this can be a grey that is an exact match or a hue or two lighter. Why grey? - because this specific wall paper's background color has a lot of yellow in it rather than cream. It is harder to find a match that won't feel too overwhelming as you said.

But if you want to find a match for this background colour or to match the grey in the bark colour, this is how to do it:

Go to the paint store with a sample of your wallpaper. Then hold up swatch after swatch of paint colours up against the wallpaper. Select the ones that look the best match (or you can try a hue - same color but lighter or darker - or two lighter from the same paint colour range if the swatch colours are on a strip) after being narrowed down. Get 2 to 5 sample pots of those paint colors, take them home and put them on the wall next to or near the wallpaper. Then go back and look at these paint sample squares at different times of day in different light. Several will be obvious right off the bat to not work. The one that does will usually stand out after several days. If not, ask others for opinions. If still not, then go back to the paint shop and try again.

I know this sounds tedious, but honestly, paint colour is one of the biggest mistakes people make which can make a whole space instantly look wrong. It is worth getting this right. Unfortunately the wallpaper you chose, although at first glance looks quite neutral, is more yellow than neutral and therefore creates a challenge. It will be worth it in the end to get it right.

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

I would go for a stone colour so not too dissimilar to what you've got. Little Greene does a good stone colour too but will work out a bit expensive. This is Oxford stone by farrow and ball. If you were doing the windows and front door then maybe an old white with door and windows in french grey

I have just had a dark north facing narrow entrance hall painted in Great White (F&B) and the inside of a stained glass hall door painted Lace Glove (Colourtrend) . I do not like the effect of the 'ice white' look from the Great White around the door and have now asked the painter to paint just that area with a deeper pink colour (Romance by Fleetwood) to match one of the colours in the stained glass. I now think it looks too pink! Another sample pot which I haven't used but very similar colour is Cinder Rose (F&B). Any suggestions as to what would warm up the area surrounding the hall door? Any suggestions for a lamp?? New painting and we originally had idea of a seat storage unit but our 2 year old used it to climb up n touch the nice painting!!! So recycled an Ikea unit, thinks look good but not sure what to put on the unit without taking from the painting? ?

PS. Difficult to tell , but Dulux taupe no.4 , might be a match . You can get a sample online .

I think you are going to have to go for a contrast rather than match. If you match I think it will just be a bit cream and boring and will take away from the wallpaper, which should be a feature

Thank you all! Yes, Artistic Interiors, I thought it was a fairly neutral feature wallpaper but it’s actually proved much harder to match than I thought! I was concerned that grey would feel cold in a north facing room but will investigate. Will def check taupe out and investigate sage green :-)

Hi. Was about to say I've grey, dulux chic shadow, in north facing living room and love it. But.....you say it's your kitchen. I think you need to be coordinating with your kitchen units now. Can you show us a pic of your kitchen?

Dulux Egyptian Cotton may go, its a taupe shade, as is F&B Skimming Stone.

Hi Jan,

This wallpaper is perplexing. It seems to change tone in different sunlight - in cloudy conditions the background has a yellow tinge to it and in bright sunlight, more of a pinky cream. I discovered a custom duvet fabric that we had made for a client do this, and it became a real palava because the fabric looked completely different at night vs the day - day it looked perfect & at night it clashed with many of the other soft furnishings - ugh.

Saying that, the suggestion made to contact the manufacturer and ask what paint colour they suggest may be a very good one. Otherwise, the method I suggested along with many of the lovely specific paint suggestions here - hold those swatches up to the wallpaper at different times of the day & then do the sample paint test on the wall to make sure - will probably be your best bet.

I meant Benjamin Moore, china white. it used to be sold in the uk through American colours, but there is now a direct store to purchase it!!

My eyes see hues of pink. Grey/taupe don’t feel like they’re going to fit. Have you thought about a complimentary colour to pink like sea moss? Not as neutral as you’re hoping but might be the answer.

Have a look at Dulux Salisbury stones which you can have made up at your local outlet. Pick up the colour strip in B&Q or similar....
