Pros and cons for barn doors

Barn doors are being installed to close off the open living dining room to keep the noise down and the house warm during winter. Does anyone want to share their experiences with me 🙂

A friend has one on her downstairs loo. It works fine except I keep forgetting it’s a barn door and try to push it open instead of sliding it, doh!

We’ve been interested for a while now in barn doors or other sliding doors for both a bathroom and, similarly to you, to devide a living room from a dining area.

My assumption is that barn doors will not do much in the way of insulating sound or temperature because of the way they close (or rather don’t) and lack of a frame.

Have you considered pocket doors?

Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. As I said, I regret we didn't; our house is great, but it could've been even better!

Hi Sinead, though I've not had firsthand experience, I've heard acrylic is a very hard-wearing material for kitchens. I have never seen acrylic in wood effect though - I'd be curious to know more if anyone else has it. Hi - its such a big and important project, i really think you need to sit down with a good kitchen designer and fully tease out your requirements and then look at every possible layout option. by sitting down with someone, they will draw each possible layout to scale in front of you and that way you will be able to see the pros and cons of each design. it makes decision making much easier best of luck with the project Barry
