New kitchen but need a childproof timeless look.

Hi, we are extending our kitchen and I would like some advice please. We have 20 yr old solid ash doors at present and I would like something more modern but which won't go out of fashion in a couple of years. I always thought wood was impossible to replicate but I saw a grey acrylic kitchen this morning which I really thought was painted wood. It had lovely shaker doors. The designer said they are very hard wearing, water and steam proof and are very easy to clean. All good as we have lots of small children. They can also be repainted which is great. Is this too good to be true?? Has anyone had one installed that peeled etc etc. TIA

Hi Sinead, though I've not had firsthand experience, I've heard acrylic is a very hard-wearing material for kitchens. I have never seen acrylic in wood effect though - I'd be curious to know more if anyone else has it. I found [this article[(https://www.houzz.ie/magazine/kitchen-planning-how-to-choose-the-perfect-kitchen-cupboards-stsetivw-vs~56113438) on how to choose the perfect kitchen cabinets to be very useful, it weighs up the pros and cons of different materials. Thanks very much. I have no idea yet of price but his exact words to me were that it's pretty much bullet proof!

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Drawers seem to be more popular than cupboards nowadays - as easier to access what's in there - and shelves look pretty but in reality they can get greasy so are a bit high maintenance !! Appliance postponing is dependent on the final design - could be in various different places ! As you have a fab sized room to work with !! The way we work is we'd sketch a few variations first then CAD up the one ( or mix of various ones) that you feels works best for you and the tweak it so it's just right! ( for about the cost of a dishwasher ) we then supply all the jpegs of the plans and perspectives and panoramics in to a PDF with a complete item list so you can shop around with ease !! Hi Divechick, No i love the layout, the kitchen is a good layout for using the dishwasher, fridge and cooker all close by., We have our plates and bowls in drawers which i love too.One thing we do need is more storage though. We are looking at knocking through to next room next year so the whole room will be wider and incorporate a utility. I think i will keep the general kitchen layout the same though but add more presses!

I painted my kitchen three years ago, and I love it. It's hard work and can take some weeks to do. You need to take doors off, remove the hinges and handles. Remember you need to prime and paint two coats on each side, so for a door that equates to six coats of paint and letting each coat dry. I used Mylands of London paint, I'm just hooked on this paint as the eggshell is dead flat with only 8 percent sheen, you wont get another paint any flatter. And if the paints good enough for Downtown Abbey, then it's good enough for us. I would hold back on painting wall tiles, as they are white and look fine , paint the cupboards first and see what it looks like. I choose Myalnds paint and had the colour mixed in a farrow and ball blue green. See photos. Good luck Yvonne
