We have started opening up our fireplace in our 1930’s semi and have discovered this disorganised random brickwork below the flue. Does anyone have any idea whether it is safe to remove it or if it is supporting the brickwork of the flue? Also, ideally we would like to shorten the flue as well, so we can have a taller opening, do we need to get a lintel for that (we will be installing a lintel to lower the opening as the supporting arch is very high). We are novices and are trying to do most of the work ourselves, but are happy to call in a builder if this is too risky.
