Need help with my sitting room

ok.....these are photos of my sitting room at present. I am currently looking a suites of furniture, corner suites etc for this room. I think it is a fabulous room but is missing style which I cannot give it. I know what I like but I cannot do the finishing touches....could anybody please advise on your ideas as I really need to whole room completely interior designed. I am based in County Clare.

Maybe try to declutter and lighten the room. It's a similar shape to my living room with stove and two alcoves either side. The wallpaper in the alcoves makes the room seem smaller and the very tall book case makes the ceiling seem lower than it is. If you can move furniture around, I'd bring in some lower pieces, longer pieces.

Also go for a sofa and two chairs rather than a large corner sofa which you can't move around. And if these are on legs so you can see the floor under them, rather than your current sofa, you'll get a better sense of space. If you have the budget I'd go for very light curtains/drapes.

I have some suggestions, but none are cream tone. IMO, North facing rooms, because there is so little sunlight, need warmth which most light colors do not give for the chilly North room. BM Leapfrog accented with Asian blue and whites; BM Goldtone accented with cream and a painted blue ceiling; BM Slip accented with white and a really dark green velvet fabric.

Love your carpet choices here! I noticed that there no artwork on the walls yet. This will elevate the mood of the room since you will need an upper emphasis once your room is anchored with the carpet. It is easier to decorate around a rug, the one you love for sure, than around a focal piece, such as art. After you choose from any of the beautiful carpets above that work with your interior, take a photo of the room with the carpet installed in it. Have fun looking for the artwork that best sings with your carpet. and that grabs you. After you have the choice of art up on the wall, look for small accessories of colour of shape, size and texture that work with the whole composition last. Do not forget something living such as plants, which take the sterility out of the room, especially neutral walls and natural floors.

This is a lovely Room. A few details that could really pull it together are a better suite of furniture, yes. I hate to say it, but black leather sofas ubiquitous and safe to the point of characterless. For some reason, it's difficult to find cushions that 'go' with them. Yes, a sectional would be lovely. As for 'finishing touches', I'd look for two nice 'grown up' lamps. A room can really come together with three sources of light and I see you already have a floor lamp. A single (feature) arm chair, full of character, like a Queen Anne, with lovely upholstery, would give depth to the arrangement.

Your pictures are hanging a little high. The center of your picture should be about the same level as your eyes, I know this is counter intuitive but it really works. I see you've a load of photos on shelves, the frames look lovely and they appear to match. Why not go for a Gallery wall? (Google this for instructions) They can really look terrific and make up for if you don't have an original piece of art. This would free up your shelves to really curate books, objects d'art, and pretty storage boxes.

Finally, an original piece of art. It's worth thinking about. Something substantial, that you love. It's expensive and hard to find, and may take years to come upon, but when you do, you will cherish it more than one bought in a shop and you'll be supporting an artist too.

Your room looks large and lovely but with an entrance at one end and a fireplace at the other can seem a bit long. Firstly take EVERYTHING out. This will show the room in the best advantage and get rid of clutter. Only put back things you absolutely love. I would put two sofas or a sofa and two chairs (they don't have to be a suite) in front of the fireplace OR get a solid coloured L shaped sofa as it seems you are orienting the room toward the TV. You could then put a nice rug under a light-feeling coffee table (maybe glass and wood to pick up your chimney breast) in the middle. This would allow you to get rid of the multiple small side tables. I would lighten up the alcoves alongside the fireplace, either paint or light wallpaper. Get a proper piece of furniture for the TV to stand on. TV stands are ugly. There's lots to choose from. Try IKEA. Take down the heavy curtains and put in Roman blinds in a print fabric you love (try to find one with at least 3 colours) and coordinate with your rug. You could then use colours in this to make/pick throws and pillows. At the end near the door you could put in a small table and your rocking chair and make it like a separate area for music or reading with a nice standing lamp. Get some inexpensive drum light shades to update the lighting and put in another standing lamp by your sofa, as mentioned above, and lower your pictures to eye height. Good luck!

HOW ABOUT GETTING THE SUITE RECOVERED IF BUDGET IS AN ISSUE?? HANG THE TV ON A WALL BRACKET. CREATES MORE SPACE. LARGE RUG IN MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR FOR LUXURY. BRIGHTEN UP THE COLOUR WITH POPS OF COLOUR IN CUSHIONS. PAINT THE WOODEN CHAIRS/CHAIRS. GOOD QUALITY CHALK PAINT. LOVELY EFFECT. I LIVE IN KILDARE!! BLUES AND GOLDS ARE NICE AND CREATE ATMOSPHERE.. I AGREE WITH "GROWN UP" LAMPS PER ABOVE COMMENT. HOPE THIS HELPS!
