Replacing staircase advice

I want to replace my staircase myself but I'm unsure about a couple of aspects.
My original newel is very slim, so half the thickness of standard - can I saw down and place my new newel on top or will the whole thing like to come out? Ideally I would prefer not to do the latter.
Can I keep my current string and replace everything above it?

You could go with either, but you should buy a dense, heavy face weight carpet. Consider something with low pile, or multiple pile heights that will help hide traffic paths. If you have reason to anticipate a lot of stains, then you might want to lean toward nylon. I personally love wool, but it would need to be heavy and dense for stairs.

Justine, in the case of a fire (probably starting in the kitchen) there must be direct escape (half hour protection at least) from the bedrooms in the attic to the exterior, it is not permissible to escape through a kitchen. The new stairs should be separate from the kitchen, if this is not possible then the attic should only be used as a study or play room and not a bedroom. Hi Macca,

The top of newel is not structural and very straight forward to replace. There are even newel post replacement kits.

The process is very easy and very diy-able even if you don't use the kit.

If you have some basic wood working skills as long as you have enough of the two bits of wood overlapping you can use any joint you have the skill to make even a basic lap joint. Kit is obviously quicker

Another approach is to clad the newel in new wood. You are esentially building a new post on top of the old one.

Or finally just sand it down fill out the damaged areas with filler or epoxy and then repaint

Regarding the string then yes as long as its sound and not damaged e.g. termite or rot.
