Sloping garden with crumbling retaining wall. Help and advice needed.
I am buying a house that has a sloping garden which leads down to a slabbed area. The retaining wall is crumbling so needs replacing. I was wondering if this is something that I could do (I'm not a builder but am not afraid of physical work) or is this something that would need an expert? The first picture is my garden and the other pictures are ideas that I would like to replicate. Things that I have been wondering are:
Can I just remove the wall or will that cause a landslide?
Would sleepers be a good way of graduating the slope? If not, any recommendations?
If I do need to get the professionals in, what kind of price would I be needing to pay?
Any advice would be much appreciated as my wife thinks I couldn't do something like this and we all know that the wife is always right!

Comments (22)What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Comments (4)Hiya, I agree about the extra bits on the back. I would remove them including the dining room bay but retain the existing external kitchen wall and square it off with the dining room, knocking through to make a kitchen diner. I'll paste my drawing in below. - the dimensions made me think you could create a loo and even fit a shower in the kitchen space but looking again at the photos make me doubt the shower idea! - retaining the kitchen windows and back door would reduce costs - the new downstairs loo area could have a sliding door that remained open when not in use so that the light from that window reached further in - you could fit a roof light above the utility space to draw more light into the remaining kitchen area - it would be tempting to fit bi-fold doors to the new dining room opening but I would research 1930s patio doors in case you could find some more in keeping with the rest of the house - with the same goal in mind, could bricks be reused for the new section of wall required to square off the utility area and dining room? You'd need advice on the dining and kitchen doors area, e.g, a pillar might be required (which could be built into the kitchen design?) so I've just left them as is. 4 years agoMy garden is on two levels too, and when we moved in my husband removed the tatty, broken concrete wall and he built a new wall from natural stone blocks. Like you, he just had a go and it’s still standing 25 years later! I love sleepers as a garden wall, just make sure they are hardwood and not soft, for durability. They’re only a little bit more expensive.

4 years agoThis is what we have in our garden. I HAD to plant roses near the edge to stop every guest aged 1 to 10 climbing and balancing on the edge of the retaining wall, as I was afraid they could fall!

4 years agoThis is how my garden looked 4 years ago. 1) 4 years ago. 2) after clearing out all old ugly trees and plants, before new plants went in. Also my husband didn’t want to invest too much, so I simply painted the old fence with grey paint. The fence is still ok, and standing after 4 years of winds etc.
