Comments (3)HI -- That is a big yard . Section off for your needs . Plan a patio and entertainment area close to the house . Then an area for the kids and then an area for a garden if needed and so on . Maybe build a little garden /summer house that has a fireplace or is screened in . Then the left over area you could just have it as a natural meadow with lots of trees where you don't need to mow grass -- the dog would love that . Add lighting too. Use some Eco grass ( no mow ) and lots of perennials and trees . Make a grove of trees like aspens or birches . Comments (25)Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. Comments (0)Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. The slide and swings in the photo have to go due to wear and will replace with a treehouse at the bottom of the garden beside the blue shed. The garden is approx. 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. Comments (0)Hi there, My partner and I recently bought a house and we are delighted with it. I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to gardening but I’d like to have a nice little back garden nevertheless. The garden is quite small but the size doesn’t bother me at all. The only issue I have is the bins in the corner (I’m hoping to get bin covers at some point) and the neighbour’s side wall which is currently being built. I know it will look much nicer when the building and painting is done, and thankfully these windows will be frosted as they are their bathroom windows. However I’d like to have some ideas to « hide » or change the focal point of our back garden when I look out my kitchen windows. Is there any tall thin trees we could plant in the back ? I’d like to install a pergola at some point or a decking area in the back but it might be difficult then to plant trees near the wall? Do you have any ideas of how I could do both ?...See More

4 years agoI’ve seen railway sleepers used to good effect as retaining walls, new ones not old ones full of nasty creosote. It is difficult to see the slope - does it slope down towards the hedge at the bottom? Paving looks good, so keep that if you like it. As you have a rather nice view, I think a more naturalistic garden would blend nicely with the landscape, that is trees and shrubs surrounded by lawn. This, of course, may not be what you’re looking for at all, but I think an over fussy garden just wouldn’t look right.

3 years agoUpdate on our garden project! Thanks for the sleeper retaining wall ideas - we are very pleased with end result! See before and after picture. Still a few finishing touches to be done but getting there and finally have some grass growing after a winter of mud, mud, mud!!! Just need some bushes/plants to go along top edge of sleepers as it is quite a drop off the edge, dont want anything too big but just something to give it a bit of ad edge to save falls! Any comments or ideas what to use for this please?
