Wall mounted taps? How much space would I loose?
We have just finished planning our en suite and everything is exactly how I wanted it (last year) and it has been plastered - but now I have changed my mind! I have fallen in love with a wall mounted vanity unit and wall mounted taps.
If I plan to tile, how much space would I loose if I put another stud wall up to hide the pipes? Its currently the original outside wall, plasterboard then plastered. Water pipes are in the floor ready to go.

4 years agoThank you At No 19, that’s very useful. I would be happy to loose 75mm of wall space. Now the question is: do I stud the whole wall between the windows or make half a wall to cover the pipes and the top of it becomes a handy shelf above the taps?
These photos are of my plastered wall, I have a freestanding bath in front of the large window and a toilet in front of the small window. The picture with the blue tiles is a shelf idea hiding the pipes.

Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Comments (25)Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Comments (19)The rules may have changed but when we built our extension the wall adjoining our neighbour had to be completely within our own boundary. It looks as if your neighbour has continued along the party wall and therefore half the depth of the wall is on your land. It might be worth getting a chartered building surveyor to check it out as otherwise it may cause difficulties when either you or your neighbour come to sell. If I'm wrong about this maybe a professional on here could correct me. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open...See More- PRO

4 years agoHi Suzanne, it looks like a great space! I am assuming you are having a close coupled WC? If you wanted a concealed cistern and have the space you could stud the entire window wall out 200mm to achieve that. If not then I like the idea of a half wall with shelf as it would have the impact of a recessed cabinet or mirror with light above it - I see you have a first fix wire there. Freestanding baths can look fantastic in the right space. I've specified them a few times in some of the higher end new builds I'm involved with.

4 years agoA rough floor plan. I don’t think it will work if I extend the stud wall 200mm. I have a 1790 width bath and the wall length 2110, I plan to have a 200mm pull out cupboard for all toiletries next to the door.
Unless I stud out the wall on the toilet and sink side only and leave the large window as it is.
