This breathtaking! What material for island and backsplash?

HI this is my favorite kitchen by far! Do you mind sharing what kind of stone/material was used for the island and backsplash? Thanks so much!

Hi there! Thanks for the compliment. The porcelain used in the splash back and counter top in this image is called 'White Fantasy' or 'Super White' and is a type of granite. Thanks again!

I think this is a really nice kitchen - you've done a nice job. The only thing that is throwing it off are the two different floors in dining and kitchen area. I'd like to see the same flooring continued through both areas. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference it makes. Since you do not like the wood or the tile, perhaps a porcelain 12x24 tile would work for you. It's very durable, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Newfies scratching it and very easy to maintain. You'd could opt for one of the wood grains on the market or one made to simulate stone. I think a greyish color would work well.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

Hi Maureen. I'd suggest getting an idea of what you like to do in the kitchen. i.e. Whether you love baking, cooking for big family social events or socialising over a glass or three etc etc. Then start thinking of the useful features you'd like to bear in mind - ie.. from above - would like a double oven with steam option, 5 hobs and plenty of prep space or a breakfast bar / island. That starts the process and then you can start looking at layouts, finishes, worktop and backsplash materials etc. As CK mentions - that's what a professional designer will run you through. Just see who's local to you and drop in / give them a call. Good luck! ;-)

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
