blocking out lights

I have white window blinds throughout my home. It’s a town house with narrow windows. Whilst I feel this is a clean and simple solution in keeping with the rest of the contemporary feel of the house. They don’t block out the light enough in the bedrooms. There is a radiator below this window so don’t feel curtains would work as not keen on short curtains. Would welcome any advice & suggestions.

I have the same blinds and same issue. we brought the blinds further forward and fitted a blackout roller blind behind which cannot be seen unless it is in use. The room is now much darker and it was an inexpensive solution. Hope that helps.

Perhaps you could replace them with black out roller or roman blinds?

Window shutters maybe?

i have a radiator under the window in my living room....i put long curtains there as by the time they are drawn, the radiator is either off or cooled right down.

I have two ideas, one is a white globe lamp, the other is a modern track system that will help you high light the art and fireplace. either will work. the ones i pictured are from Ikea, but im not sure if you have access to them. or a lighting showroom?

Looks like a massive declutter would help a lot. Think about lighting too, it looks like a nice bright room, so I'd work on maximising that. In the kitchen I'd go for the same number of chairs as people and keep the table quite small, especially if you have another room to eat in. Do you have a conservatory off the kitchen? That could make a great breakfast area.

I have a wonderful west facing view & enjoy great sunsets the only problem is if I want to watch TV I can see nothing because of the reflection.I don't want anything to detract from the view & the blinds I have looked at won't cover the window ,3 panes each 1.2 metres wide.Can anyone recommend something to block out the light but won't take away from the view ?

Hi, I think any of those 3 could look good, with white elsewhere as a contrast and bringing in some bright warm colours with cushions, throws etc. We repainted our house last year and used Farrow and Ball colours - Elephants Breath is very popular and looks great in our living room, we used their darker greys in our sitting room and hall. You can get Dulux to mix FandB colours so it works out cheaper if you like. I was afraid of it being cold or dark but love it!

You could leave the Venetian blinds for light & privacy during the day and add Roman blinds, mounted above the window so they cover the sides too. Like this...

Agree with petersmummy. I'm rather sleeping in a cool dark room, then a light warm one.

Which ever style of blind or curtains on the outside of the recess will allow light bleed at the edges. It’s difficult to see how deep the recess is, would there be sufficient space for a 25mm Duette black out blind to sit in front of the existing blind? The fabric goes right to the edge of the cassette making the tightest fit possible for any blind style. Luxaflex have an operating system called Literise which would work well. If there is insufficient space for a secondary blind, you could replace the existing with a ‘day and night‘ Duette, it would be a pity to waste your existing blind though.

I'm with Carolina, put up Roman blinds on the outside and they will cover the whole window at night. That's what we do in a lot of our rooms.

I would recommend recess fitted black out Romans (measured exactly no gaps to let light in) I measure it so that it has the smallest give ti allow a smooth raisun and lowering. I also black out curtains. Even the a sliver of light in my bedroom keeps me up.

I agree Patrina. I have black out blinds, black out curtains with additional black out liners and a pelmet to stop light spillage. Chink of light and I’m awake!
