Need help choosing wall lights for mirrored wall cabinet in bathroom

Hi all!

Am currently redoing my bathroom and need to choose wall lights for a traditional style mirrored cabinet. Not sure if the lights would need to protrude farther out from the wall than the cabinet, which is 150 mm deep and what style would be best. Thanks for any advice.

We faced the same or near identical question in our recent remodel. Our solution was to purchase brushed nickel, dimmable LED friendly fixtures placed 4 inches above the "normal" position. We also positioned LED ceiling "can" lights for more light, washing the room. (12x12 bathroom). In other words, rather than medicine cabinet lights overhanging the mirror, we moved up. I don't remember the maker/brand or model number of these, but can dig through the builder list later, if you wish. (It's 5:30 AM here right now! LOL)

Thank you, Stan, for your advice. I was contemplating putting a similar light like yours above the cabinet, but decided I prefer lights on either side, as there is a lot of space which I'd like to fill a little. I will also put them on top of tiles, so another point to consider. The ones I had chosen only protrude 90 mm from the wall, so I wonder if they should protrude at least the same as the cabinet, which is 150 mm, to illuminate the face, when putting on make up or in general. Here is a picture of the lights I really liked...and another one in a room situation ( not my bathroom), but they are next to a mirror with minimal depth. I like them a lot, but am open to other options, just wondered about projection.

Once again, carolins has taken the words right out of my mouth. I sometimes feel like a crusader for entertainment centers and lowering art! You have a dynamic room with so much potential. Your wall could look amazing with the armoire carolins has pictured above. Of course, lower your sconces so that they're a about 4" below the top of the armoire and about 7" from the sides. Your fireplace should be your focal point with your wall being strong but not competing. Rooms get personality from smaller accents but you have too many little things that take away from the great colored pillows and the picture. Be careful not to hang things in straight lines--top of pictures should never line up with tops of doors or curtain rods. I wish we could see your fireplace in another photo. Chairs should form conversation groups with the couch like Carolyn has outlined. I like your chandelier but you might think about lowering it or moving it above a dining table--it looks rather lost way up there.

My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. OR if you can afford to then replace only green tiles & floor tiles if you wish to OR all tiles.

Hi there, We're in Kilkenny and we're lighting designers. A lot depends on budget but if you are re-fitting areas we could recommend fittings for the walls plus how about highlighting the top of wall with a good bathroom uplighter around edge - LED perhaps. The issue is that it is too flat as the colours are similar. If you added more depths of light it would help greatly. Of course we do a full range of bathroom fittings too so even a simple thing like two well chosen wall lights would help significantly. If it was me, I would centre it and only silicone the back. I understand your concerns about water going down the side. Realistically, though, as you will only be washing your hands and maybe teeth in it, there is unlikely to be much water gushing about. To detract from the fact there is not as much space on either side of sink, I would have carpenter either wall mount or put legs on the cabinet so there is space underneath and the unit doesn't look too chunky!
