Garden ideas for a long sloped area please?

We have a long sloped garden with 4 large lime trees they have TPO’s on and their roots are everywhere there are 2 round the front and one huge one round the back there is a smaller tree in the photo that has to go because it has crack in the trunk, the soil is like clay and it gets very dry in summer because of the slope excuse the pun but I’m stumped and would welcome any suggestions. Thank you

Hi April. Depends on how you would like to use the garden for. With sloping gardens I think you could go two ways. One is to carve out terraces to make the higher levels more useable or the another way is to make a feature of the slope and make it look very natural with spring bulbs and wild flowers. I went to a beautiful garden in Cornwall some years ago and it had a huge slope covered in wild aquiligas, for the life of me can’t remember where the place was called tho. Ditto what Rachel said re making it into levels. We will have 3 levels in our garden because it was sloping and it works really well.

Not sure how it work with the lime tree stumps in the way though

It seems that 2 story houses are becoming much more the norm here. At least in the metro areas. People are wanting bigger houses and builders can get more house on less land. Mattresses, box springs and dressers have to be the WORST things to get up stairs ;-) I love the look of staircases and love the view a 2nd story provides. I'll tell ya though - we're not elderly (YET!) but I love not carrying laundry and other items up and down stairs ;-)

How will you pose for your Miss Photogenic photo op? Will you go with the Carmen Miranda fruit bowl tiara? Or would the Easter egg thingamadooeys suffice? Decisions, decisions..... Hi nick. Thanks. Yes, i have come to that realisation after being told it by everyone i speak to! So looking at hedging or other ideas for the side fences then shrubs / plants / flowers for the main parts. I'd be interested innyour ideas. On the other side if the fence, if you mean the road side, the footpath is right up against the fence. I'd say the footpath is maybe 1.5m wide, maybe a bit more.

Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

Thank you for the suggestions I think the planting looks a lovely option we have several patios and sitting areas so love idea of planting I may even add a secret path through it

Hi April, planting sounds a great idea if you already have space for sitting. It will be easier and so much more cost effective than terracing. The RHS are a great guide when choosing plants. Their website has filters for clay soils etc. and you can set up a profile to receive care tips :-) https://www.rhs.org.uk/#nav-gardening . You might want to consider wildflower seeds to save on the number of plants you have to buy. These are great for wildlife too. I use Scotia Seeds a lot https://www.scotiaseeds.co.uk/ they have seeds for many situations. We're in Scotland and they're suited to us, but you may have a supplier nearer you. A final tip is to think about seasonal interest. For example, having Primroses which flower in winter, as well as spring bulbs and summer wildflowers. Good luck with your project, I'm sure it'll look great! :-)
