Garden Privacy for back to back gardens

Ive recently bought a corner plot house with a back to back garden with neighbours on the opposite side. Im wondering what is a nice, but not too intrusive way, to add some privacy. I saw these potted trees and thought they would be easy to manage and quite appealling on the eyes. Does anyone know what type of tree they are? Or maybe know any similar ones that could fit the same purpose? maybe something with a bit more colour.

That is an Olive tree (Olea europea) It would be a good choice if you want year round privacy as it is evergreen. If you want more interest if you are in a warm part of the uk you might consider a Mimosa (Acacia dealbata) which has yellow flowers in late winter, but can get quite large. A Photinia is another option which is also evergreen, but has the added bonus of white flowers and the young leaves are a bronzy colour.

Thanks for the suggestions Esther. Ill look into each of them. I am actually based in the UAE, so I'll do my research to see which of the above might survive in this climate also.

I really think it's the plants that are supposed to be the center of attraction so I have a hard time thinking of anything better than painting the wall gray and the planters charcoal. However, trying to keep an open mind I did locate the photo above with yellow planters, which would be pretty against a gray wall. But looking at your very lovely blue door, I could see repeating that very same color on the planters and leaving the wall gray. It's always a good thing to repeat an existing color when it looks as great as that one does. That blue would be dynamite on a planter filled with green plants and colorful blooms.

What are we looking at to the right of the photo that's white? Get some annuals in the flower beds. Check the amount of sun you have and plant accordingly. You can mix vegetables and flowers. From your photo, and in order, I would get a canvas gazebo both to give you privacy from the neighbors and to block your view of their houses and the kids stuff. Mine had the canvas you could zip up AND screens. We had our table and chairs in there. It was really lovely and lasted many years. There are ways to stabilize them on the blacktop without drilling into it. Looks like you could use a new shed, I'm not sure the one you have is being used

I have a very nice large back garden and patio area but cant enjoy it as much as I would like because it is very windy. I have trees an scrubs on the perimeter but the site is sloping in a dip so there is always a breeze even on hot days. Any advice on creating a sheltered area to sit ?

Should we cut our back garden trees?

My husband and I are considering cutting the trees out the back of our garden. They have grown out of control and as you can see are very top heavy. Our garden is south west facing so they block out the evening sun during the summer and generally have a darkening effect. However, we wish to retain privacy from houses behind us (the houses behind are about half the height of trees as they currently stand). Would really appreciate some suggestions or ideas! Should we cut halfway and perhaps grow climber up tree trunks or should we just remove entirely (an expensive option!)?

A Trachycarpus would grow in that climate and in a large pot, as would Bamboo - which are great for screening.
