Master bath shower

Our designer mentioned that we need a bigger shower, especially for resale. We now have a 47 x 46 inch shower with a ceiling height of 10 foot with a 2 foot bulkhead. The designer is recommending a complete remodel which would allow for a 36" x 72" shower (with bench) and removing the bulkhead.

Questions. 1. Would the 36" width seem strange with 72" length? 2. Being that the ceiling height of the shower would now be 10' (removal of bulkhead) and the shower quite long, would this make for a cold shower experience?

Our shower is 36x60 and does not feel overly long, and if it was a foot longer it would still feel fine, especially if the bench is at the end of the shower.

Are you changing the shower anyway?

Do you have the room to keep the width and just extend the length? To me the 36 inch width is very small unless this is a guest bath not used often. I wouldn't put in a shower less than 42 inches wide in a master bath and 4 ft wide is better. JMPO.

Here's what I've found after living in and visiting many tract homes- LR-13x18 FR-12x16 (and that they not be in the middle of the traffic flow pattern aka many tract homes post ww2 till about the late 50's) Kitchen (no eating area) 9x11 DR/Nook or other eating area 10x10 Entry-at least 3'6" wide 4' better Bedrooms (good design would at least provide 2 good bed walls aka no doors or windows in it) MBR-12x13 w/ at least 10 linear feet of closets All other bedrooms-10x10 with at least 5 linear ft of closets all closets 2' deep, Baths-5x8 but 5x9 better if fixtures lined up on one wall and tub/shower at end 7x8 and 8x8 with the tub/shower fully accessible if it's 5 ft long 6x8 if it's a 3' shower (fixtures lined up on 2 opposite walls). If you look and many floor plans the best ones will have all of this. Note that square footage does not have to be a lot-ciculation/flow between rooms helps this.

About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). My shower door doesn't reach the rim of the bath so therefore water dribbles onto the floor. I have tried to get a deeper plastic strip to put on bottom of shower door but no luck.

Yes, Danita. We are replacing the shower anyway. We have another option of extending the length of the shower and keeping the current width. I guess the shower would not be so drafty this way.

I haven't had the experience of a drafty shower. I have had very large showers in previous homes (largest was about 8'x8'). However, I'm in south FL so having a drafty shower isn't really a possibility here. I have shown new construction homes with that very long shower that gets negative responses from the buyers because it went from a reasonable length like 6 or 7 feet to something like 11 or 12 ft. Totally ridiculous. The shower has to fit the room. You do have a designer so that is a good thing. The thing that I disagree about was the very skinny width your designer suggested. Is that because of the size of the room or the location of the shower or something else?

I agree with Denita to keep the wider width. One way to minimize the possible draftiness would be to continue the glass shower enclosure up to the ceiling, in which case I'd properly tile the walls all the way up and be sure the tiled walls and ceiling have moisture resistant drywall so you wouldn't create problem with deteriorating drywall. The length of the shower should not affect draftiness. I'd go as large in either direction as you can comfortably within the available space.
