happy kitchen - paint cabinets, new countertop?

thinking about painting cabinets..would love to get rid of tan everywhere...thoughts?

I'd first try just painting the walls that touch the cabinets a navy ish or dark gray color:

Fix the lighting. Fix the paint. Don’t spend 7-9K on painting those cabinets professionally, or 6 months of your nights and weekends DIYing it. The cabinets are fine.

Hi Bernice, Congrats on your new kitchen ! Your new kitchen looks very nice. Very clean, simple, sleek design. Either #2 grey or #3 Cream would work nicely. The cream would make your kitchen feel lighter, brighter; it is very pretty, not bland at all. Since your ovens-side cabinets are already dark, maybe the grey would make the kitchen feel too dark and heavy ? #3 Cream would be my pick, given these 4 choices. :) ( For our recent remodel, I also went with either off-white or cream-ish for all the countertops -- kitchen and all the bathrooms :) From your idea books :) --

Yes, I would and did start with cabinets. Browse through he kitchen photos here on Houzz until you determine your favorite styles. Start a kitchen idea book and save every photo that has something you like, cabinets will be your biggest investment. Once you know your style, begin thinking about counter tops and backsplash. One or the other will be your "star." If you already have a favorite, try to coordinate other choices with it. For example, I found my backsplash first, then chose the counter to go with it. Often people have their counter in first then struggle to find a backsplash. If you fall in love with a beautiful, busy granite you will want a simple backsplash. My floor was last, keeping it simple to avoid clashing with other choices. Good luck and have fun! This can be an overwhelming project but your friends at Houzz can help!

I would still do an island. You have the space. I hate having my stove against the wall. You get boxed in and forget about two people working at once. How about stove in island, fridge all the way down to the right? You don't want the fridge to interrupt work space. You will end up w two too-small spaces instead of one nice functional one. We had an island with a downdraft Jenn-air stove-worked quite well for most needs.

The colour would depend on lots of variants. Such as what’s on the floor? how much light is there? Do you have a splash back what’s the counter top? That said would you consider painting the island a feature colour? Such as ink blue or emerald green? It would make your island a feature. Good luck

Thank you Sophie...the main house color is Patience...maybe I just need a white backsplash..subway tile???..What color paint?...I love light and clean..Decorators White? Light Blue?

I agree with Sophie that it looks fine. I may be nitpicking, but the labels hanging off all your cushions bother me more. Once you have pillows and cushions in your home, you can legally snip the labels off. I think your whole space looks good.

I have to agree with others that it seems the wall paint (and counter) colours are the culprit. The banisters and cabs have some life to them. I love 2nd pic benjesbride posted or even something green/grey.

Wouldn't that color be way too dark....I like light filled kitchens

I'm suggesting painting just the walls that the oak touches a dark color, so just the range and fridge walls. The rest of the rooms can be off-white if you like.

I wouldn't paint your cabinets. But like others said, paint the walls (soffit, back of the island, above the backsplash), the colors that benjesbride suggested are great.

Changing the countertop too, maybe lighter? You could paint first, and then re-evaluate your backsplash and countertop options.

As Sophie said, a professional paint job is pricey. Your cabinets look fine. For now, I would change the wall colors, change the light fixtures, change the counter and buy a dishwasher to match your other appliances. In five years you may decide you want an open plan kitchen, so save your money.

My own warm wood kitchen seems light to me. If you do not have under cabinet lighting, add that first. It was the best thing I did functionally, and it lightens up a kitchen.

Is the middle drawer to the left of the sink broken? It look as though it is not tracking. And those hanging cushion tags look as though they would be a big temptation for a puppy to grab and chew. Try to find a half an hour and snip them away. It will make your space look much nicer and finished as you debate painting.

You can break up the expanse of soft brown on table & chairs, cabs, counter, and floor by adding a colorful rug under the table, colorful placements on the table, colorful pots on windowsill, colorful table centerpiece, and colorful countertop accessories in bright colors that play off the colors in the drapes. Fix the off-kilter drawer by the sink. Replace all the cab door and drawer handles.

My kitchen cabinets were very similar to yours; I painted them and have never regretted it. Having said that, I think you could get an updated, and fresh new look just by painting your walls white, getting some new knobs for your cabinets and changing out your counters and backsplash to white as well. I think that would give you the bright/light kitchen you want, while still maintaining some warmth. Some kitchens with similarly coloured cabinets...

I painted parts of my backsplash with different sample jars of whites and creams after my countertop was in and that helped me to decide.

When the tile is in, but before it is grouted, there is the illusion of contrasting grout. You can step back and see how you like the effect. I would not use a high contrast with wood cabinets because it could look too busy. Also, high contrast means the tiles need to be very perfectly placed because the contrast shows any imperfections. Sometime, to get a backsplash to come out even, especially in an older house with potentially out of plum walls, there is a need to fudge the grout lines just a bit and this may or may not be noticeable with a contrasting grout - depends on the tiler and the walls. A light contrast may look fine - but again, that decision can wait till you see it coming together.

If you are going with white tile then I would suggest white grout, just to keep things tidy and simple. As for the knobs? Because of the colour of your wood, I'd avoid any thing 'golden', like a brass or a champagne finish. I love matte black personally, but bronze could work too. I also think you can't go wrong with stainless, nickel or maybe even chrome. Whatever you finish choose, I think design-wise you should look for something with clean lines- nothing too ornate- to give you a simple, more modern look. It may not sound exciting, but a white+wood combo is classic and timeless, IMHO.

If you would prefer something different than the typical, white subway tile, then perhaps you might consider some white, glass, tile instead? Something like these would look lovely, I think; white, bright and modern.....

I think painted cabinets would look great and give you the lighter-looking kitchen you desire. Choose a cabinet color based on the lightest color in your countertop.
