Design Dilemma Kitchens

help with flooring for kitchen and family room

We are in the midst of a kitchen extension and a new family room next to the kitchen. The kitchen is howdens floss dove grey with a dark grey, almost black work surface.

We just don’t know what type of flooring or even colour. I’m not a huge fan of every room been different flooring as I like to see flow from one room to the next. The hall and living room is oak laminate. So do we continue that all the way through or go for different?

We have got a sample of a couple of ones we liked the look of in the shop but not sure of them now.

Any suggestions would be great.

We have oak flooring through out the whole house. We were told to be able to do the oak flooring (wooden) in the kitchen we have to seal and oil it so when water does fall it can’t penetrate into the wood. I like the whole house having a flow too so we went with this instead of changing the colours of the floors and doing a tile.
It does look nicer and there’s a nice flow to the whole of downstairs. Hope this helps a little.

We went with a pale oak LVT (quickstep livyn) through whole of our downstairs. So waterproof for kitchen but looks nice in living areas as well. Really pleased with it although it does pick up the odd light scratch.

Actually neutral rooms are very classy :) And adding a hand-knotted New Zealand wool carpet such as the one I've pictured would add a lot of coziness and ground the space, while complementing your striped chair. Small accents of colour can be added in artwork and on new sofa cushions. The fireplace makes a bold statement in the room, which could be compromised by giving the walls equal weight with bold colour. I understand that this is your family room, where you will be relaxing at the end of a long day and watching television. Therefore a calm, relaxing (yes, neutral!) colour scheme will achieve that. The charcoal grey drapes I described above should have lining, and they will add to the warmth of the room at night so you're not looking at cold black glass that's reflecting the room back to you. The colour scheme you have now is actually very nice--it just needs punching up a little with additions such as I described.

I would use the same flooring throughout, give your separation of spaces visually with decor and I love Vancouver Day from C2 paint I have it all through my house in different strengths, very neutral so almost anything goes with it.

100% Wood. I actually am installing for the second time wood flooring in my kitchen and dining area in fact the whole first floor. I did the second floor in Brazilian Cherry and just love it so much more than the oak that I currently have. However if I had to choose I would choose the oak floors over tile every time. They wear better look so much prettier. And like the previous poster pointed out I hate dirty grout lines.

The builder ought to be ashamed for not cleaning up each night...that is part of what my contractors do...every night. As far as flooring...since the cabinets are on the darker side...use a contrasting flooring in travertine stone. use the largest pieces you can get...usually 18" are good but if you can get 24" that's even better! Put them on the diamond. as far as backsplash use travertine again and bring in the same color as the flooring. Use a touch of contrast in the pattern like a darker liner or a motif of somekind.

The pale oak looks really good, much better than the one we currently have in the rest of the downstairs.

Thanks! We were really surprised by how realistic it looks - took us ages to choose between that and a slightly darker/warmer one. There's so much variation between planks and the sample doesn't really show that. Good luck with your decision!

I would definitely get some wood effect flooring to add a bit of warmth without using actual wood.

Luxury vinyl tiles (amtico /karndean) are perfect for the kitchen as they are durable, water resistant and are warm to the touch. porcelain tiles are another option which gives durability, however are colder to the touch therefore would recommend with Under floor heating.

If you don't want to swap the flooring for the rest of the house, you may find a tile/vinyl which closely matches what you have now.

Hi,
For something different there is micro cement.
It's trowelled on and the result is a seamless finish that's waterproof and durable.

There is an array of colours and effects to choose from and bespoke touches can also be added!
