Tiny Morning Room Layout Dilemma
This room leads to the kitchen. It also serves as a play area with a small couch...
As it is used as a througway, we need to incorporate storage to house the toys and we would also like to make the lounge area somewhat more intimate..
All ideas and suggestions welcome!
I know it's a tall order, trying to fit all that into a 3x2m room but we really want to make this work as we love everything else about this property!!
It's only really an issue because the room is used to access the kitchen...

6 years agoWow that's a high ceiling! I would definitely try to visually lower it. You could do this by painting it a different colour but bring it down the walls so it's about picture rail height. You could also use some jazzy wallpaper or fabric drapes. Some large funky light shades would also visually lower the height. With the furniture I think you're more limited in terms of space but I think some modular furniture would work well, in particular some wall units with lighting underneath. Have a look at some ikea hacks as there are plenty of options. A large bold artwork and possibly a floor lamp will also help break up the blank walls. Here's some inspo:

That was my immediate thought and also means that you will get light into your living area all day since the kitchen would be at the front and the living room at the back. It will be a nicer space to live in. If you really can't face bedrooms at the front though could you do something like this? It clearly isn't to scale!! You probably sacrifice a bit of space in that smallest bedroom but gain much more liveable floor space at the front of the house. It also gives your husband the open pan area he likes. Comments (27)I think you're making great progress. CDR wanted you to put them all vertical because she thinks only professionals should style bookcases. We are/were all amateurs at one point, that doesn't mean we shouldn't decorate our own homes. You're getting there! Just keep studying the photos of bookshelves that you like and keep practicing. 6 years agoI would build a mezzanine too, however, I'd make that for the adults as children climbing up steps depending on age might need constant supervision.

6 years agoWhile they are young how about building the a play kitchen with lots of integrated storage for other toys? Or how about putting a large sideboard in the space to make it appear like a grand hallway (you could store their toys in there for now, then dining sets when they are older). Another option would be to have floor to ceiling (!) shelves and drawers on the LHS to make it look like a mini library.
I'd replace the sofa with one or 2 compact armchairs too

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoSo, if you want to keep this as a play/seating area, you could do what rachelmidlands suggested: paint or wallpaper the ceiling and the top part of the walls, to visually lower the ceiling and widen the room. Maybe a nice green? Or a blue.
Then you could paint the walls in a soft white
I would hang two big drum shades from the ceiling at 'normal' ceiling height. That will make it cosier and again visually lower the ceiling. These come in a huge variety of colour combinations: http://www.quirkuk.com/xl-with-coloured-linings/
A striped rug will look cosy, softer for kids to play on and again have the widening effect.
I'm also wondering if something like this along the long wall will work for you: storage (part open, part closed) around a sofa and perhaps a narrow desk with seating cubes under it on the opposite long wall?

Just found this photo of what I meant with shelf with cubes (or other pouffes) under it.
Also, you could think about changing the door to a sliding one, which will give you more space.

6 years agoIn that case I think the photos Carolina has provided of the sofa inset to the shelving unit will provide a great solution. You could use the lower part of the shelving unit to stow a small coffee table and those brilliant stools from Carolina's pictures, so then you can use them and put them away quickly and easily. Or what about a small corner sofa with storage above head height? Alternatively what about having a corner sofa made with storage access beneath, to create more of a "room" feel rather than a "corridor" feel - some inspiration in the pictures below. When your kids are older and don't want to play on the floor you could add a dining table to create a luxe dinette for your kitchen :)
